4th Annual Global reddit Meetup Day

$

This past Saturday thousands of people in hundreds of cities all over the world gathered for the fourth annual Global reddit Meetup Day. Whether it was smashing a Snoo piñata in San Diego, cleaning up an adopted highway in Delaware, giant board games in Central Park, eating magical Jāņi cheese in Latvia, playing Upvote, Upvote, Downvote (reddit version of Duck, Duck, Goose) in Detroit, arm wrestling in Seoul, or just hanging out with food, drink, and apparently lots of Cards Against Humanity, fun was had. We've pulled just a few of the amazing photos from the meet ups into a gallery below. As always, we were impressed and humbled (and still a bit hungover) by all of the amazing work that people in these local communities do to organize meetups. If you attended a meetup and had a great time, be sure to thank the organizers and folks involved.

Remember to submit great meetup photos to /r/about.  If you missed out on GrMD or are looking for more meetups in your area check out this wiki to find your local area subreddit.

Also, if you are looking for a more serious reason to meetup, /r/RestoreTheFourth is organizing pro-privacy protests around the US and beyond. Check out the growing list of local protests planned here.

Global reddit Meetup Day V will be on Saturday June 14th, 2014.

Ahoy. We are ecstatic to announce a new member of the team - Victoria Taylor (/u/chooter). Victoria is a new employee, but she's been an advocate and supporter of all things reddit for years (seriously, she can't stop talking about reddit). Diving right in, Victoria will be joining us as the Director of Communications where she will connect reddit far and wide. Here’s Victoria in her own words...

"I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and just moved to New York by way of Los Angeles. I love cats. My middle name literally means cats.   Not to get too philosophical, since we’ve just met, but I think reddit is like the ocean... everything online, in some way, shape, or form, begins here and ultimately returns here. My favorite subreddits include /r/OneTrueGod, /r/aww, /r/IAmA, /r/LosAngeles (I'll miss you guys!) and /r/badmovies. I love anyone who loves American Ninja 4, Troll 2, or 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain, or any bad movie with a number in the title...and I'm always looking for recommendations. I'm beyond honored to be joining the team in New York and can’t wait to further educate people on what reddit is all about."

Please join us in welcoming Victoria, and as always, ask her anything in the comments!

Rally to Restore Your Rights on July 4th

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
                                                                  - Fourth Amendment, U.S. Constitution
Restore the Fourth is a non-partisan, non-violent movement assembling nationwide protests on July 4th 2013 to raise awareness of unconstitutional surveillance methods employed by the U.S. government. We are humbled that this truly grassroots movement was started here on reddit only 23 days ago. reddit and the rest of the individuals, businesses, and organizations in Stop Watching Us coalition demand transparency and meaningful reform to domestic surveillance programs.

On July 4th, join the thousands of people in over 50 cities across the United States who will protest the surveillance methods employed by the U.S. government.

You can learn more and sign up for your local protest at www.restorethefourth.net.

There are also protests going on in Canada and the UK.

If you are concerned about these issues, but unable or not interested in attending a rally (it'll be fun), there are many other ways for you to get involved:

From the StopWatchingUs coalition letter (read full letter)
"As reported, the U.S. government is extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person's movements and contacts over time. As a result, the contents of communications of people both abroad and in the U.S. can be swept in without any suspicion of crime or association with a terrorist organization....This dragnet surveillance violates the First and Fourth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which protect citizens' right to speak and associate anonymously, guard against unreasonable searches and seizures, and protect their right to privacy."
In addition to all of the individual privacy issues, these secret mass surveillance programs are troubling for online businesses like reddit. The potential that a business can be legally and secretly compelled to violate the privacy of both foriegn and domestic users casts a pall over any U.S.-based site. In turn, this threatens to place U.S.-based internet companies, one of the most dynamic and booming sectors of our economy, at a global disadvantage. Users of any U.S.-based site should expect and demand that their private information is steadfastly protected from government intrusion, as promised by the 4th amendment.

The 4th amendment in spirit was designed explicitly to prevent these types of programs. Secret laws and secret interpretations of laws, like FAA (2008) Section 702 or USA Patriot Act 215 aren't what democracy is about.

This 4th of July - restore your rights.

Welcome, Kelly & Gary!

In a sign of reddit's ongoing progress toward "its destiny uninterrupted," we're excited to introduce two new members of team reddit. Please help us in welcoming Kelly and Gary. Team reddit now has twenty-eight employees. Uncoincidently, twenty-eight is the only positive integer that has a unique Kayles nim-value. Think about that.

Kelly Moriarty (/u/iamapillow) - Sales Associate
Helloooooo reddit! My name is Kelly and I am so unbelievably happy to join the reddit team. I’ve been redditing on a number of different usernames over the years, but I decided to become a pillow, so I did.  Now cats are cute and all, but sharks are my one true love. My goal is to create an army of sharks and take over the world, but I’ll settle for helping reddit keep being awesome. Long story short, I was born in Germany, grew up in Connecticut, and I now live NYC. I was working at a marketing agency when I saw this job posting in /r/forhire, figured it couldn't hurt to apply to my dream job, one thing led to another, and here I am!  TL;DR I like sharks and always reddit at work. My favorite subreddits include /r/oldschoolcool and /r/fuckyouimashark

Gary Jense (/u/garyjense) - Business Development, redditgifts
Hi reddit! I've spent most of my adult life living in Salt Lake City where I studied business at the University of Utah and where I still reside today. I was introduced to the redditgifts team shortly after they relocated here last summer and, after a year's worth of BBQs and one crazy Christmas party, I had the opportunity to join the team full-time. Going forward I'll be managing redditgifts' business development efforts, which largely means I'm responsible for growing the newly launched redditgifts marketplace. Outside of work, I enjoy skateboarding, reading fantasy, and climbing. As a result, my favorite subreddits include /r/skateboarding, /r/climbing, /r/fitness, /r/fantasy, and of course, /r/cocktails.

New Default Subreddits? omgomgomg

It’s that time again — time to update the default subreddits! For those of you who don’t know, this is the set of subreddits logged-out users and new users see as their front page before they customize their subscriptions. It's been quite a while since we’ve made major changes to that list of subreddits (though we recently added /r/news to fill a gap that was missing), and we figured that it was high time to shake things up a bit on the front page. This is just the first small step in a much longer process for updating the front page, so we hope you all enjoy the new content!

The new list we’ve come up with was based off of a few key factors: traffic to the subreddits, rate of subscriber increase, average number of users online, and number of submissions/comments being posted. We’ve tried our best to make sure that the new additions are fairly “general,” and a few of the new additions are also there to help cover some areas that have never had a home on the front page. With these updates, we hope there will be an appropriate default for many of the most popular topics.

Without further ado, here's the new list, excluding the official defaults of /r/announcements and /r/blog (new additions in bold):

  1. /r/adviceanimals
  2. /r/AskReddit
  3. /r/aww
  4. /r/bestof
  5. /r/books
  6. /r/earthporn
  7. /r/explainlikeimfive
  8. /r/funny
  9. /r/gaming
  10. /r/gifs
  11. /r/IAmA
  12. /r/movies
  13. /r/music
  14. /r/news
  15. /r/pics
  16. /r/science
  17. /r/technology
  18. /r/television
  19. /r/todayilearned
  20. /r/videos
  21. /r/worldnews
  22. /r/wtf
We know many of you will wonder what happened to /r/politics and /r/atheism and why they were removed from the default set. We could give you a canned corporate answer or a diplomatic answer that is carefully crafted for the situation. But since this is reddit, we’re going to try things a bit differently and give you the real answer: they just weren't up to snuff. Now, don't get us wrong, there still ARE good parts about them. Overall, they just haven't continued to grow and evolve like the other subreddits we've decided to add.
This change will largely affect logged-out users and new accounts, so if you already have an account and you've ever subscribed to or unsubscribed from any subreddit you won’t notice any difference from these changes. To update your personal subscription list, just visit the "my subreddits" page at http://www.reddit.com/subreddits/mine

This is just the first step in a larger process, so keep your eyes peeled for some other updates to the default set in the future and be sure to check out our multireddits beta and leave some feedback!

reddit myth busters

Over the years, we've seen many flavors of myths and theories about "reddit the business." Some of them have been plausible, some have been ghastly, and some have been downright reptilian. We want to address some more common recurring myths we see out there and be as transparent as possible about the size of the company, our business structure, profitability, and other questions we've encountered.

myth: reddit is a huge company.

reality: reddit has only ~28 employees. 42% female. 18% left handed. 7% Canadian. 25% born outside the US. 21% Linux users. 32% prefer orange juice with heavy pulp. Total employee mass is well under 3 tonnes.

myth: reddit is spelt 'Reddit'.

reality: reddit is spelt 'reddit'.

myth: 'spelt' is spelt 'spelled'.
reality: We did not know this until writing this blog post.
myth: Condé Nast owns reddit.

reality: reddit is not owned by Condé Nast. reddit used to be owned by Condé Nast, but in 2011 it was moved out from under Condé Nast to Advance Publications, which is Condé Nast’s parent company. Then in 2012, reddit was spun out into a re-incorporated independent entity with its own board and control of its own finances, hiring a new CEO and bringing back co-founder Alexis Ohanian to serve on the board. The best characterization might be to say that reddit is a “part-sibling-once-removed” of Condé Nast.

myth: reddit has a secret group of shadowy investors.

reality: We've never released a full list of reddit shareholders, but not due to any desire for secrecy. Rather, it's because shareholder lists are typically boring financial information no one cares about, even when they are made public (quick: name the major shareholders of any major corporation). If anything, the people who've invested in reddit are proud/eager to announce the fact, but we had originally requested that they refrain in order to avoid contributing to startup funding hype.

reddit has 3 sets of shareholders: The largest shareholder is still Advance Publications. The second-largest set of shareholders are reddit employees. In the spin-out that occurred in early 2012, Advance voluntarily reduced its sole ownership to that of a partial owner in order to put ownership in the hands of current and future employees. The third and smallest fraction consists of a set of angel investors. Collectively, these angel investors own less than 1% of the company and the amount held by any angel is actually less than that owned by any single employee.

They are:

  • Alexis Ohanian, previously co-founded reddit
  • Craig Shapiro, also runs CollabFund, fan of reddit
  • Dave McClure, also runs an incubator 500Startups
  • Ellen Pao, previously at KPCB, now works at reddit
  • Jawed Karim, previously co-founder of YouTube
  • Jeremy Edberg, some guy
  • Josh Kushner, angel investor, Thrive Capital
  • Josh Schachter, previously founder of del.icio.us
  • Kanyi Maqubela, also runs CollabFund, fan of reddit
  • Keith Rabois, previously COO at Square, now at Khosla Ventures
  • Marc Andreessen, previously co-founder of Netscape, Opsware, now runs a16z
  • Paul Buchheit, previously made GMail and Friendfeed, now at YC
  • Yun-Fang Juan, previously at Facebook, worked on self-serve ads engineering

We asked all the angel investors to invest as themselves, not through their institutional venture funds (if they were affiliated with one). We’ve also asked them if any of them want to do AMAs, so you might see that in the near future.

Finally, reddit’s board consists of Alexis Ohanian (reddit’s co-founder), Bob Sauerberg (President of Condé Nast), and Yishan Wong (reddit’s CEO).

myth: reddit is making tons of money, so you are just lining someone’s pockets by buying reddit gold.

reality: reddit is not yet profitable. Here’s a numberless graph showing the (rough) relative difference between expenses vs revenues:

Expenses are projected through the end of 2013, revenues are as of 2013 Q2 - numbers have been removed to thwart would-be Wall Street analysts. The graph is derived from our internal accounting.

myth: reddit (or Condé Nast or Advance) is trying to clean up to go mainstream, to prep the site for a sale or IPO.

reality: reddit is not preparing to sell or do an IPO. We value our independence more than money, and the company was already acquired once before (by Condé Nast) and survived due to a rare instance of corporate benevolence/indifference. Other companies who sell themselves usually don’t end up so lucky, while going public (IPO) means having to answer to short-term shareholders and irrational market pressures. We don’t want to risk either of those.

Condé Nast / Advance also never wanted to sell reddit, and rejected offers to buy the site, instead electing to spin it out into an independent entity and take a lessened ownership position specifically because they felt that a standalone reddit would be far more successful, culturally significant, and (one day) profitable.

myth: reddit content is controlled by Condé Nast / Advance / old media companies / rich powerful people and manipulated to advance their interests.

reality: With the exceptions of a handful of incidents in very early years (e.g. Sears), none of reddit’s owners or investors have ever bothered to exercise influence over reddit’s operations or editorial decisions. Even reddit’s servers are controlled via an AWS account not shared with any other entity, only reddit administrators have access to it. Control of this account was also never transferred to or shared with Condé Nast during the period when they were owners of reddit.

myth: reddit pays for celebrities to do AMA interviews and writes all the answers for them.

reality: reddit does not get paid nor does it pay for celebrity AMAs. We also don’t write any answers for them. To be absolutely transparent, some or all of the following things do happen:

  • people contact us asking us to “allow them” to do an AMA
  • people contact us asking to pay for an AMA
  • reddit contacts people inviting them to do an AMA

In all of the above cases, we explain that an AMA is something that anyone with a notable life experience can do, and we may offer them help for free, in which “help” consists of helping schedule AMAs or explaining what an AMA really is and how to execute an AMA well - from signing up for a reddit account to what to expect from the audience to how much time they should try to set aside. We don’t accept payment for any of this - AMAs are by and for the community.

Sometimes people (e.g. studios, filmmakers) will buy ads on reddit to support an upcoming film or television show. While the ad campaign is running, they may also convince the actors to do an AMA — obviously they understand that this has positive promotional effects. Or, occasionally after a particularly good celebrity AMA, the celebrity (or their agency) will create an ad just to thank their fans — recent examples were J.Cole and John Malkovich.

myth: Olive Garden paid users to promote the restaurant.

reality: People just really love Olive Garden's unlimited breadstick baskets.

myth: My conspiracy theory wasn’t listed here! That means it must be true!

reality: That’s extremely unlikely. We probably just didn’t think of it while brainstorming this blog post. There are just so many.

It's that time again - Extra Life gaming marathon!

I am happy to announce that reddit will once again be participating in the Extra Life gaming marathon to raise money for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

Last year the folks on team reddit raised over $78k for their hospitals. This year we're setting our sights a bit higher with a team goal of $100k. Come join our team and help us make that happen!

What is Extra Life?

The Extra Life marathon works a lot like other charity marathons. People sign up and get their friends and family to sponsor them to raise funding towards a cause. But instead of running or biking a marathon, we play a marathon of games.

Children's Miracle Network Hospitals is a non-profit international organization that treats sick kids, regardless of a family's ability to pay. CMN is a very reputable charity program, and has been rated highly [charitynavigator.org] by evaluating agencies.

How to participate

To join, go to extra-life.org/team/reddit (or another team of your choosing) and click "Join This Team". During the sign-up you will choose which CMN Hospital you will be raising money for. Follow that up by spreading the word and asking friends and family to sponsor you for the marathon. Also, visit /r/ExtraLife to chat with your fellow teammates.

On November 2nd at 8AM your local time, sit down (or stand, if you're into that) and play games. Normally the marathon runs for 24 hours, but thanks to the power of Daylight Savings Time, those of us playing from 8AM to 8AM will be playing for 25 hours this year. If that specific day and time doesn't work, you're welcome to marathon when it is convenient for you. While many people participate in the full-length marathon, you're completely welcome to marathon at a pace and time that works for you.

You can play anything you like, be it console, PC, board games, or tabletop. Play from your home, or meetup with others.

As a thank you for participating, any member of team reddit that raises over $100 will receive 2 months of reddit gold for free.

How to donate

To donate simply choose a player from the team roster and click "Support Me!". Please note that each member chooses the specific hospital that he or she is raising money for.

Still have questions?

Be sure to check out the /r/blog thread for discussing and questions regarding the event. You can also check out the Extra Life FAQ as well as the /r/ExtraLife FAQ. Folks from Children's Miracle Network Hospitals will be participating on reddit to answer questions.

Real-Life Karma: an update on some altruistic stories

$
0
0
With the billions of things happening on reddit at any given moment, it can be easy to lose track of what happens beyond the original post. We followed up with the OPs of three stories that touched redditors’ hearts to get updates on:

For Lucas, the 3 year old with a rare disease (Hyper IGM Syndrome) who needed a bone marrow transplant in 2011, reddit banded together to donate over $50,000, so his family could move to the city where he needed to receive treatment. Lucas’ dad was so touched by the generosity he experienced that he got a reddit tattoo of a snoo with a heart on its chest.

Today, thanks to that treatment, Lucas is now 5 years old. Lucas’ father Luis shared how the response from /r/assistance affected their lives:
In the days and weeks around reddit’s outpouring of support, we were obviously overwhelmed. There is no life experience that prepares you for that kind of event… Perhaps just as important as those few weeks at the end of 2011 are the months that followed..... We received a steady stream of care packages, cards, PM’s and emails while we were in the hospital... There are still constant reminders, and they help us remember the kindness and generosity we want Lucas and Liam to learn as they grow up.

On March 14th we celebrated Lucas’ one year transplant anniversary andbackpackwayne helped us (as always) spread the word on reddit so everyone could see how well Lucas was doing. While his progress has been slightly behind the original projections, he’s still doing very well… we have no reason to believe he won’t make a full recovery and lead a normal life.

Personally, the one thing that has been surprisingly better than expected in all of this is my Snoo tattoo. Every time someone notices it, I get to share the whole inspirational story all over again.

Liam and Lucas

David, a close friend of Lucas’ family, shared his thoughts on the experience:
reddit has power. The power of millions of people coming together to change lives in meaningful ways. When my now fiancee's sister and husband realized their son, Lucas, had a rare disease and needed a bone marrow transplant, things were looking rough… We took photos of Lucas telling his story and posted it to r/assistance. The reaction started slow, with supporters donating $5 here, $10 there... but the magic of Reddit soon began to happen... We were receiving an amazing outpouring of love in our thread from other redditors: tales of support, hardship, sympathy, and hope…. Our lives and perspectives were forever changed by the kindness, generosity, and love shown by strangers on this website. We remain in shock and awe of the power of reddit to this day.

We cannot thank each of you enough for what you've done for our family, but there are other families just like ours that need your help too. Please embrace the redditor spirit and sign up to be a bone marrow donor - you could change the life of someone just like Lucas! http://www.bethematch.org and The Immune Deficiency Foundation.

In January 2012, a redditor shared the story of Anthony Omari, who was attacked with a machete while single-handedly defending a Kenyan orphanage.

The OP originally posted asking for $2,000 to finish the fence to keep the orphanage safe, but thanks to the community, they were able to go above and beyond. They had this to share:
When I originally posted the photo of Omari with a small appeal for help back in January, 2012, I had no idea what to expect from reddit—certainly not the incredible outpouring of support and encouragement we received from the reddit community. In less than one week more than 3,000 people from dozens of countries across the world donated over $80,000 to Faraja Children’s Home in Kenya, essentially saving the orphanage from closing and giving the children a safer home and more hopeful future. If you didn’t see the 1-year update about how some of the money was spent, check it out! We are currently trying to find sponsors for all 37 children at Faraja to ensure they will be able to continue their education past the age of 13 (when Kenya’s free public education ends).

All of us at the Longonot Education Initiative and Faraja Children’s Home cannot thank the reddit community enough for your kindness, generosity and the support you gave Omari, his family, and the Faraja children in their time of need. We are all so grateful. Thanks for being so awesome!

Finally, just a few weeks ago on reddit, a 2 year old girl undergoing cancer treatment made a wish for a pizza party that became a “global pizza reddit signal.” In her mom Lauren’s words:

Ever since the "Pizza Bonanza" (that's what we have been calling it!) has happened to our family, we continue, each day, to be extremely humbled and left speechless by the outpouring of support from complete and total strangers. Even now I struggle to put into words the effect it has had on our family. Not only did we have well over 20 pizzas delivered in honor of my little girl's struggle, but someone was kind enough to include links, on the original Reddit post, to our Facebook page, Hope For Hazel; our blog; and our donation page. Because of the thoughtfulness of this individual, we have close to 10,000 likes on the Facebook page, I had nearly 70,000 hits on my blog for several days straight and so far have received over $13,000 in donations!

…To know that so many people have cared enough to take the extra steps to read about my daughter, and the fight that she is enduring, has been nothing less than extraordinary. People from around the globe continue to send well wishes, prayers, letters and packages to Hazel, and personal stories of struggle and triumph that all encourage me in ways that they may never understand…

Another wonderful thing that has happened is that I have been able to use this marvelous and uplifting story as a platform to raise awareness for childhood cancer… Now, I can point people in a direction to learn more and to support a community of families who desperately need our help!

I urge you to learn more about childhood cancer from sites like www.thetruth365.org, www.curesearch.org, www.cookiesforkidscancer.org, www.stbaldricks.org and www.alexslemonade.org

These are only three of the altruistic acts, big and small, that redditors do every day. From volunteering to donate kidneys to helping those in need buy a hearing aid to supporting a teacher who sheltered her students during a tornado to randomly gifting another reddit user a new monitor to filling a teacher’s empty bookshelves, we know there are countless stories about redditors out there making the world a better place.

We’re really proud to be a part of this community, and can’t wait to see the amazing things that you all do in the future. We hope you continue to share your and others’ stories of redditors making the world a better place, starting here in the comments with stories we weren’t able to update, and in future posts. We’d love to hear them.

P.S. If you know any teachers that need help getting classroom supplies, we have more volunteers to donate to teachers than teachers who have signed up for our teacher gift exchange, now accepting signups through September 3rd. Send the teachers in your life this link!

Over 10,000 Teachers Need Your Help

Please consider participating in our annual reddit gifts for the Teachers drive and help teachers get the supplies they need for their classroom! You will feel great and make a concrete difference for the teachers and the children. Sign up here

None of us here at reddit would be where we are today without the amazing teachers who have helped us along the way. Many of us at reddit also have friends and family who are teachers and we witness how they always end up purchasing basic supplies out of their own pockets.

To help support teachers we started reddit gifts for the teachers, where teachers sign up who are in need of supplies for their classrooms, and nice people sign up to send them some supplies! There is no minimum or suggested value of these gifts, they can be as simple as some pencils or glue sticks. Our most requested items are photocopier paper, whiteboard markers, colouring pencils/crayons/markers, construction paper, & safety scissors (remember those?).

Last year, over 2,500 participants from around the world sent almost $150,000 worth of supplies for teachers as the new school year started. This year over 10,000 teachers around the world have signed up, but right now we don't have nearly enough redditors to match them. Please consider participating so that we can match all the teachers. You can even sign up to give to more than one teacher. You have no idea what even $20 in school supplies can mean to a classroom in need! Sign up for redditgifts for the Teachers 2013

Here are just a few examples of personal requests from the teachers participating in the exchange:
Thank you so much for choosing to send my students a care package! I teach high school Biology in a very low income, inner-city school. My classroom is a place where kids can forget about the violence, poverty, crime, and gang activity that is a part of their everyday lives. I know that they live with these realities and try to make class time something they will remember. I don't like textbooks and do tons of hands-on activities. Unfortunately, with a $0 budget for supplies, I spent over $1200 last year so my kids could have good experiences, like dissecting chicken wings in Anatomy class because we could not afford to order specimens. I can use ANY school supplies (glue sticks, colored pencils, construction paper, pencils, pens, spiral notebooks) or anything else to make my students have a special experience in high school...GO MUSTANGS!
-----------------------------------------------------
I teach 7th grade mathematics at a Middle School, which is located on a Reservation. Many of my student do not have a home to return to after school, so they often only eat the breakfast and lunch the school provides. I try to provide snacks throughout the year for the students to take with them for the night, but I always end up running out within a few months. The wishlist is just a few suggestions for snacks. ANY snack would be greatly appreciated though.
-----------------------------------------------------
I teach English in High School.  For many kids, it's their least favorite subject.  I try to change that by making reading fun again.  Students make my classroom awesome-they do amazing art projects, they're funny, they're experts at crafting sarcastic remarks that I recount to my friends later,  and they try hard. Any kind of classroom supply would be great or maybe your favorite book--as long as it's not Fifty Shades of Grey or something by Dan Brown.
-----------------------------------------------------
I teach at a project-based learning school where students do a lot of digital learning and art projects.  Unfortunately, providing those art supplies is a burden that falls on the teacher.  I would love to receive poster paint, Crayola crayons/markers/colored pencils, scissors, cardstock, poster paper, etc.  I do not need glue or rulers (I'm still enjoying the spoils of last year's gift exchange in that department!). Cleaning supplies would also be a huge help.  Windex, clorox wipes, paper towels, kleenex, etc. Finally, if any of the above don't strike your fancy, I'm on a quest to collect posters for each of the books that I teach my students.  I've added a bunch to my amazon wish list.  Currently my classroom is completely barren.  I'm a pretty new teacher and I just don't have the budget for extra decorations for my classroom.  I would love some art to give students something interesting to look at and to get them excited about reading!
Thanks a bunch, reddit!  Oh, and by the way...our mascot is a panda.  We're the best at being adorable :)
-----------------------------------------------------
I have a large class of excited third graders beginning school in a week. I thrive to allow my students to be as creative as possible. Unfortunately, due to district budget, my classroom is lacking in basic supplies. At this moment I have 10, 8 count, boxes of crayons. I would love for my classroom to have enough colored pencils and markers for students to share and enjoy. Thank you!
-----------------------------------------------------
I teach 9-12th grade special education.  I am currently teaching five courses and my yearly budget is $70.  Needless to say I spend this within hours!
My students are really cool young men and women, but they really don't bring supplies.
Examples of things I ask them to bring: binder (any color, used, size doesn't matter), pencils, pens, folder, paper.
Know what would be the BEST?  A huge stack of graph paper!

  • Thank you to everyone who is participating and everyone who has been spreading the word about this project. Most of all thank you to all the teachers out there. You do amazing, underappreciated work everyday. Thank you!

I'm putting the reddit alien on a bus and doing a 100 stop, 65 college, 5 month long tour for internet entrepreneurship (let's hang out)

Huzzah - my login still works!

reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian here with a very big announcement I wanted to share with all you first.

(not to scale)
I'm about to embark on an epic 100 stop, 65 college, 5 month long tour promoting internet entrepreneurship. Sure, it’s technically for my book, Without Their Permission, which is both a blueprint and a rallying cry for the open internet and entrepreneurship, but what I want to promote is how our generation has a tremendous opportunity to do amazing things online. We're all still figuring out just what kind of an impact the internet will have on the world -- let's be the ones doing it.

This isn’t just my story, it’s the stories of your successful alums as well as current students, all learning from and contributing to the greatest platform for ideas the world has ever seen (the internet). All told, the student bodies of all the schools I’m visiting is just shy of 1,000,000! I told you it’s going to be epic.

Let's hang out IRL, high-5, and I'll doodle you a reddit alien while you alternate between asking me anything and telling me about your favorite subreddit.

About this epic tour

This tour is going to be the exact opposite of every book tour so far; as in, it’s going to be amazing.

The week before each college visit, I’ll jump on the college’s subreddit to source what you want me to discuss in my keynote the following week at your campus. I’ll talk about anything you upvote most—seriously—and take your questions on stage for an AMA IRL. After that, because author readings are silly (if you wanna hear me read my own book just listen to the audiobook) I'm bringing back an alum of your school so I can interview him or her about all the awesome stuff s/he's done online since graduating. I want these events to be everything Steve and I wish we had as undergrads at UVA (wahoowa).

Finally, to keep with the this-ain't-no-conventional-book-tour-mentality, we’re going to have a book signing/networking combo after each event so everyone can put their newfound enthusiasm towards planning their foray into entrepreneurship, not standing in a long line.

Afterwards, we’ll head to a meetup organized by the college subreddit at a local watering hole.

Why a massive tour spreading the goodness of entrepreneurship?

Back in 2005, Steve and I ended up visiting Cambridge during our senior year Spring Break to hear Paul Graham give a talk called "How To Start a Startup." This talk set Steve and I on the course that led to Y Combinator and thus reddit. I’m proud to announce that Y Combinator is backing this tour, so it’s kinda coming full circle.

I hope this tour will be more than an awesome excuse to rent a bus for five months—may it inspire and guide a new generation of internet entrepreneurs. And I'm not talking about just starting the next reddit (or some other tech startup); the internet has the potential to re-invent so many industries begging for innovation.

Even if you're a history major like me, there's no excuse. The more people we can get learning and creating online, the better ideas we'll have in the world. And I just want better stuff: better companies, better art, better comedy, better music, better nonprofits, better activism, better everything.

There are amazing projects going on right now nationwide that I’ll use this tour to spotlight. We are a generation that hasn't been given much to work with, yet I'm so inspired by people I meet, whether on our heartland bus tour last fall, in Brooklyn where I live, or everyday throughout the vast communities here on reddit.

In fact, reddit has offered free sponsored headlines to support the following types of awesome projects at your university:

How you can help

We’re making a ton of progress, but we haven’t confirmed all 65 colleges yet and I’d love your help. Take a look below, and if you can help in any way (like you know an administrator, professor, or student group who wants to make your college event happen—or if you’re a staff or faculty member who wants to help) please don’t hesitate to email me and my team epicbooktour@alexisohanian.com.

If we aren’t speaking at your school, I’m sorry. Perhaps you can convince us (we’re all ears), but really it’s a matter of timing, logistics, and the laws of physics.

We’re also still looking for alums to bring back for the fireside chat at a number of universities, so if you’d like to nominate someone (or yourself) please fill out this form.

I can’t wait to upvote you

I’m excited. Even more excited than when I see an orangered at the top of my screen. I always love meeting redditors all over the world; if it weren't for you, reddit would still just be me and Steve submitting links with each other, so there’d definitely be no book, and thus no tour—and I would have no use for this t-shirt cannon. Steve would've gone on to be another programmer in suburban Virginia and I'd probably be an immigration lawyer.

Thank you for that. I hope I can show you just how much I appreciate you all and take every single one of you out for waffles.

PS If/when you've pre-ordered my book, please fwd the receipt to me thankyou@alexisohanian.com so I can thank you properly.

PPS Yes, /r/redskins, I've worked it out so I can fly back for every home game—except for the Chargers, because of a wedding. So it goes.

A Few More Gold Benefits

$

It’s been a few months since we launched our first set of expanded gold benefits. Since then we’ve been able to sign on a few more companies, so we thought we’d announce those as well as answer some common questions about the gold benefits program. Here are the new merchants who have signed on since June:
  • Our own redditgifts marketplace - giving out free t-shirts and Elves memberships
  • Bart’s Bakery - really good cookies. 20% off anything you buy from them.
  • Betabrand - unique stylish clothes. 20% off anything. Maybe you saw my picture.
  • iFixit - guides, parts, and tools for repairing… anything. $20 off purchases of $50 or more.
  • Outgrow.me - buy successfully crowdfunded items. 15% off anything.
  • Rover - background-checked dogsitting service by dog lovers. $50 credit.
  • SOL Republic - HD headphones. 20% off purchases of $99 or more. Also giving out free headphones.
  • Uber - private car service in many cities. $25 off your first ride.
For a full list, check out the page here: http://www.reddit.com/gold/partners

How do gold partners work? How do you select them?

We try to find merchants whose products we can test and personally recommend.  For every merchant featured here, there is at least one reddit employee (usually multiple) who feels the product offered by that merchant is really great and worth recommending to fellow redditors. In some cases we looked specifically for brands that redditors already know and appreciate, like Bart’s Bakery and iFixit, both of whom have done popular AMAs in the past.

No money changing hands

These aren’t advertisements for these merchants. They don’t pay us. They are extending promotional prices to redditors, and we don’t receive any of it. What we want is for every bit of the discount they’re willing to offer to go directly to redditors, so you’ll want to continue buying reddit gold.

You benefit most when it’s a merchant you’re already thinking about buying something from: most of the discounts are in the $20 or more range, so buying a month’s worth of reddit gold ($3.99, or less if you buy in bulk) should save you a ton of money.

Yes, it’s marketing, but it’s not how you think

Being one of our gold merchants helps to market these companies' products, right? Yes! But that’s not the whole story.

The best companies (we feel) are ones who make a good product and follow that up with great customer service. Nothing goes absolutely perfectly all the time, and you want to know that if you buy something the person who sold it to you will back it up. Thus, we have reddit discussion threads for every merchant and every gold feature in /r/goldbenefits - and we tell every gold merchant when they agree to sign on that they are expected to have someone who can solve problems and answer questions monitoring that subreddit and resolving issues post-haste. It’s customer service in public.

Good customer service shows you actually care about the people buying your products. But as it’s often a quiet thing, it’s hard to tell which companies do it well until you’ve bought something first, or heard via word-of-mouth - and that can be a slow process. What /r/goldbenefits does is provide a place for companies who really care about doing things right to demonstrate it to redditors.

The best companies often just focus steadily on making a good product and ensuring their customers are happy. With gold benefits, our goal is to help make it a little easier for you to find them.

Global reddit Service Day - October 5th, 2013

The 2nd Annual Global reddit Service Day* (GrSD) will take place on Saturday October 5th, 2013.

Help clean up a beach, host a fundraiser concert, build a playground, donate some blood, or...???

Global reddit Service Day is the perfect excuse to join up and meet new friends, do something fun, and give back. Beer tastes even better after doing something amazing for others. Last year redditors across the world gathered to help clean up parks and trails, plant flowers, volunteer at charity events, build houses, organize food drives, work at animal shelters, and much more.

/r/clarksville
All you have to do to participate is go to your local (or university) subreddit. Then just join in the thread about Global reddit Service Day [GrSD] (or start a thread) and help organize some group volunteer activities in your realm. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Last year a few groups just went and donated at a blood drive together. Another group in Japan picked up trash at local beach and then went snorkeling.

Just pick something, make it happen, and have fun. If there's a parade/holiday/dome in your town on the 5th, just pick another date in October that works for y'all.

Find your local subreddits here

Find your college subreddit here

We have something special planned to highlight the subreddits that go above and beyond, so even if you are a small group, please document your event by taking photos, videos, telling stories and sharing them on your local subreddit. Everyone who participates in GrSD 2013 will get a special trophy, and more importantly the satisfaction of giving back to your awesome community, town, city, hamlet, school, commonwealth, protectorate, realm, etc. See you on the 5th.

*Last year we called the event "reddit Dedicated Day of Service (rDDoS)", but we found that no matter how good the context is, sys admins (including those at reddit) have a negative and visceral reaction to any acronym containing "DDoS".

If you haven’t noticed, several months ago we started writing all official reddit tweets in Spanish. Because ... why not? So here's a bit more background on where we were coming from and why this matters to us.

In the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. So we thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to write about our Hispanic/Latino community on reddit!

If you live in the US and have Hispanic/Latino roots— whether they are Argentinian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Salvadoran, Paraguayan, Chilean; if you speak Spanish, English or
are bilingual; you form part of the largest racial minority group in this country. That means that 17% of the population, or 53 million of us, are of Hispanic/Latino origin as confirmed by the United States Census Bureau. To give you a better idea, that would be the entire population of Colombia and Nicaragua combined!

In Hispano America— consisting of portions of North, Central and South America — there are around 390 million people. When you throw in the Spanish population as part of the worldwide Hispanic culture, it brings the total up to 437 million people who speak Spanish as their primary language. That is a pretty huge voice!

There are differing opinions in the U.S. and in the rest of the world of what actually constitutes the Hispanic or Latino community. But let's leave that topic for another time.

Recently the first-of-its-kind reddit study earlier this summer by the Pew Research Center reported that 11% of all Hispanics who are online in the United States are redditors. This means that, statistically, there’s a significantly larger percentage of Hispanics online who are redditors compared to the population of non-Hispanic redditors.

Here are the top Hispanic countries on reddit and their page views in Aug. '13 (Source: Google Analytics):

#22: Spain - 1.1 million page views came from Spain (/r/es; /r/spain)
#25: Mexico- 1 million page views came from Mexico (/r/mexico)
#41: Argentina- 500,000 page views came from Argentina (/r/argentina)

Oh and one more statistic: 17% of the reddit staff is Hispanic/Latino. ¡Awww siiiiii!

Tips for Hispanics reading reddit in Spanish:
Logged out: visit http://es.reddit.com
Logged in: within your account preferences, you can change the interface language to Spanish.

And to think, just 3 years ago there were problems like this...

Here is a list of some of the subreddits I have found within the reddit community. Some of these subreddits need a little loving, so please feel free to start submitting even if there is not much content there already! You just have to browse, explore and find what you like in reddit.

/r/Seattle GrSD 2012
Global reddit Service Day is coming up next Saturday, October 5th. It's a day where people gather and do volunteer or service activity in their local communities (and then, usually, go drink). It's a great way to meet some new folks and give back to your local community.

Local subreddits have already planned a variety of different events. For example, Birmingham, AL is getting together to help clean up a local nature preserve, Orlando is volunteering at a local Ronald McDonald House to help families of sick children, and Washington, DC is helping a local food bank.

We've compiled a list of all the local subreddits that are planning an event or at least discussing it. Check the list below and see what is going on in your area. If your local subreddit isn't listed, post a link to your GrSD thread in the comments and we'll update the post to include it. Also, if there's a better GrSD link for your local subreddit, please pm me and I'll update.

Thanks to all the mods and users who have been organizing events. Make sure to take photos and post them back to your local subreddit!

Wow, this is a big announcement for redditgifts and reddit!  redditgifts has gotten a new office and hired four new people and reddit has hired one.  Five new hires!  I think that's the biggest new hire announcement we've ever done.

Why the new hires you ask?  Well, redditgifts opened a marketplace last December and this year has shown that we are really onto something!  Also, it should come as no surprise that reddit has been growing as well and we've been making some pretty big enhancements to our advertising systems.  Over the next few months (and years), with the help of the new hires below, we're going to be able to make our marketplace, gift exchanges, and advertising a ton better!  We're excited!  Here is a bit from each new hire:

Dante Orpilla (/u/youngluck) - Designer, redditgifts
Hello, reddit. My name is Dante. I am originally from Oakland, California but for the better part of the last decade I have been in Los Angeles, where I paint, make loud noises with instruments, and now design for reddit. I've been a redditor for 4 years, half of which was on paper. I've never lurked. I have one account. I laugh obnoxiously loud, all the time. Sometimes I laugh at how obnoxiously loud I laugh. Every piece of clothing I own is covered in some kind of paint. I love my son. When people ask me what redditgifts is, I tell them it's a manufacturing company. We manufacture good will towards fellow human beings, and provide a platform for people to manufacture more. People we have never met, and probably never will. In this day and age a company built on that foundation is a rarity and I am profoundly grateful to be a part of it. To check out the messes I make, you can follow me at /r/youngluck. Be good to each other.

Brian Holt (/u/aquilaFiera) - Front End Developer, redditgifts
Hey reddit. I'm a Montana native that's been in Salt Lake City for quite a few years and hope to be here for years to come. I've been a redditor for years but only been a non-lurker for a year or so. Definitely excited to be apart of the upcoming Secret Santa and working on the marketplace. Future duties include making redditgifts mobile-friendly, prettified and other /r/HailCorporate activities. When not appeasing the corporate overlords, I enjoy doing any number of outdoor activities in a spectacularly poor fashion and taking any excuse to get out in the beautiful Utah outdoors. My favorite subreddits include /r/mtb, /r/skiing, /r/running, /r/AnimalsBeingJerks, /r/SaltLakeCity, and /r/bearswithbeaks.

Kaela Worthen Gardner (/u/highshelfofsteam) - Marketing, redditgifts
Hello, reddit! I am a self-described grammar nerd and have spent most of my career thus far working as a writer and editor in the magazine industry. I gradually started doing more and more on the marketing side there and found I enjoyed it a lot, and now I'm privileged to be doing full-time marketing for a site I love and promoting the thousands of cool and unique products in the redditgifts marketplace. I originally got my start redditing sitting on the couch beside my husband, and we still enjoy turning the links purple together and sharing our favorite reddit finds with each other. When I'm not really hard at work, I like to spend my time discovering the world through documentaries, books, cooking, travel when possible, and, of course, the wonderful world of the internet. Some of my favorite subreddits are /r/nottheonion, /r/abandonedporn, and /r/writingprompts.

Eric Fish (/u/mrefish) - Back End Developer, redditgifts
Hey reddit! My name is Eric, but here at reddit they call me Fish. I graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Computer Science. I will be doing back end development for redditgifts predominantly in Python. In my free time I like to learn about microcontrollers, all things open source, cars, and the liquid content of craft beer bottles. Some of my favorite subreddits are /r/HistoryPorn, /r/Python (and most python related subreddits) and /r/linux.

David Ehrmann (/u/dehrmann) - Self-serve Advertising Engineer, reddit
Greetings from San Francisco! After all those times walking by reddit's office, it's hard to believe I'm actually here.  I've been a redditor (under a few accounts) for over six years, and while I've had a few reddit-related adventures, this is probably the craziest. I'm here to work on reddit's self-serve ad platform (those sponsored links you see at the top of the page). It's a cool promotional tool with some pretty unique uses, and I'm excited to see what we can do with it. I've been a software engineer in the valley for seven years, working on a lot of different things—drivers, databases, mobile apps, consumer-facing websites—but a large chunk has been advertising-driven. My life outside reddit’s a bit like /r/random. I (attempt to) play the guitar, work on random tech projects, have done some nifty DIY projects like glassblowing and metal casting, skydived, golfed, surfed, flown an airplane…and enjoyed it all! Aside from /r/random, not surprisingly, I enjoy /r/programming, have to give a shout-out to /r/engineering, am always amazed with what I find in /r/adporn, and never know what I’ll learn next from /r/lifeprotips.

As always, ask us anything in the comments. And of course, thank you for not using Adblock!

Remaking Our Self-Serve Advertising System

$

The reddit self-service advertising system is going through a much-needed overhaul. This system is built in-house by reddit admins (with some valuable help from our ad server Adzerk) and allows for anyone with a reddit account (and a verified email address) to run sponsored headlines across reddit. This won’t affect much of your day-to-day use of reddit, but we wanted to explain what we’ve done and why we’re doing it.

A sponsored headline is the blue stickied post at the top of the page. These ads have been available for any redditor to purchase since 2009. These headlines are run differently than the image banners that show up on the right side of the site. The image based ads don't have a self-service option, but have always been sold on a CPM basis (CPM is an advertising term for the cost of 1,000 impressions).

The new self-service platform will be sold on a CPM basis. This means that there will be a set price (currently $0.75) for 1,000 impressions of your ad. This is a departure from our old pseudo-bidding system where you bought a portion of all available impressions — you named how much you were willing to spend, but you’d have little guarantee on how many impressions you’d get for that set price, which made it very difficult to tell how many people would see your ad. This semi-lottery based system prevented us from offering ads to reddit users in many countries outside of the U.S. (anyone that didn’t have credit cards in the U.S., U.K., and Canada weren’t able to purchase ads). It was tough to have to turn away many overseas redditors who had some great products, and we hope to welcome you back with our new system.

Sponsored headlines can now include dropdown text, marked by the “Aa” box. Advertisers are able to now use the longer text box to share stories about how they started their companies or products, link to other sources of information, or even excerpt a chapter from their book. We’ve had some advertisers set up campaigns, and though our sample size is small, early indications are that these ads do better because they are more informational and interesting — there are two times the average time on page on these ads compared to normal reddit post!

This is the first very important step in making the self-service platform a great advertising tool for the reddit community. To reiterate our commitment from last May, while reddit also runs ads from brands and outside companies, we want to build an ads system that is a community resource — a system for redditors to advertise to each other. As we grow this system, we want to add features of other robust self-serve systems, like enabling discount codes for redditors, A/B testing, or geotargeting — but we want to design it in a way to serve the reddit community’s own particular needs. For example, users may want to use it to inform others about causes they’re promoting, or to try and find more subscribers for a new subreddit they’ve just created - or simply to promote an event in a localized subreddit.

To set up an ad, you can visit the self-serve advertising tab in your account or go directly to the “create a promotion” page here.

We’re also experimenting with some new ways to use improve the ads themselves. Some are in the very early stages of development and might not make it, but the following list gives you an idea of ways we're trying to make ads better on reddit by keeping commercial messages separate, clearly identified, helpful and interesting. Advertisers interested in these experiments should email marketing@reddit.com; moderators can PM us at /r/reddit.com.
  • Subreddit ad buyouts. In April, /r/gamedeals moderators self-posted about how frustrated they were with affiliate link sponsored headline ads in the subreddit. A redditor from Amazon saw it and worked with us on a solution: Amazon bought out all the /r/gamedeals sponsored headline ads, using some for non-commercial posts and donating its affiliate fee from /r/gamedeals sales to a non-profit. We’ve had this arrangement for the past few months, and it seems to be making the site better for /r/gamedeals redditors. Since the sponsorship, the subreddit traffic has doubled.
  • Q&A ads. We like the format of advertisers answering questions about their products or companies, and want to encourage these conversations. So we’re testing ads where one or more employees of a company answer questions from redditors to see how they do and how you respond.
  • Thank you” messages. We’re working with folks to help them spread positive messages that are not really ads. We’ve seen several advertisers buy ads to thank the reddit community, and we love those ads, because they cared enough to let people know that they enjoy their time interacting on reddit. For example, J Cole was so excited after his AMA in /r/hiphopheads, he took out an ad as a “thank you.”
  • Smaller ads. We’re working on reconfiguring our ad system to test the 300x100 ad as our default banner ad, replacing our standard 300x250 ad in many cases. This change frees up more space on the sidebar for subreddit content and also encourages advertisers to customize their ads for the reddit community.
  • Sponsored contests. We have had a few companies reach out to us about their interest in giving back to the reddit community through sponsored contests in a variety of subreddits. We've tested this out in a couple of places with some pretty good results, so we're excited at the prospect of doing more around the site! We still have to work out some of the finer details, but keep your eyes peeled for sponsored contests in a subreddit near you.
What are we are keeping the same:
  • Still no flash
  • No front page roadblocks of sponsored headlines
  • No autoplay video or audio
  • No retargeted ads
We’ve improved our self-service advertising system recently to make it more consistent, understandable and global. We are working on other improvements to our advertising, and testing out different ad formats, too. We appreciate your feedback in /r/ads, /r/selfserve, and elsewhere, so please keep it coming.

Dear everyone,

We’d like to thank everyone who’s been buying gold or gilding comments, and thought we’d share some interesting stats on where some of that gold goes.  The following are some stats we pulled on gilding activity over the past 6 months:

Most gilded subreddits:

(These links will take you to the “gilded” tab in each subreddit, showing you the gilded comments therein)

Sent to us via postcard.  You could send one in too.

Most gilded small subreddits (at least 500+ subscribers, sorted by gildings-per-subscriber ratio):

Secret pro-tip in the middle of this post - you can see a feed of all gilded comments here! But back to...

Most highly-gilded threads:

Another postcard gem.
Note: Asking for gold is rarely the best way to get it.
Most highly-gilded comments (you'll want to read these):

99trumpets on Explosion at Boston?

More trivia: the most total gilding done by a single user over the past 6 months is 144 months of gold (that’s 5.6 gilds per week, so we’re pretty impressed), followed by 120 months for second place.  We’d tell you who they are, but unless otherwise notified, we assume that such beneficent benefactors desire to remain anonymous.

'How it Feels to get gifted gold' by /u/Half-Maus

And as an ongoing thanks for your support of reddit, we have three new gold benefits to announce:

You can subscribe to any discussions about new and existing gold benefits at /r/goldbenefits.  If your interest is piqued consider buying yourself or someone you love reddit gold.

Lastly, thanks to you, our loyal gold users for supporting reddit with your gold subscriptions!  You’re helping to reduce our dependence on ads and make reddit community-supported!
