Thanks for the gold!

Wow. The support we have received over the past few days has been astounding. It all started with a TIL post that spread acrossthesite. In response, people contributed by gilding, purchasing reddit gold subscriptions, cross posting and making positive comments all over. From the entire reddit team, thank you for all the support.

You are contributing directly to reddit’s sustainability and financial health. It has been incredibly excitingto watch the reddit community support us so strongly, and has validated our passion and commitment to keep the site running full speed ahead. Since many people requested a way to see how gold is doing, we have developed a daily gold goal thermometer that you should be seeing on the site shortly. Needless to say, you have all far exceeded our daily gold goals over the past few days.

The numbers show how impressive your support was. From Thursday to early this morning, you bought 568 YEARS of reddit gold and 822 individual months of gold.

What impressed us even more was your generosity to other redditors. 1,536 redditors bought 2,568 months of gold for others across several threads in multiple subreddits. A redditor even offered to cover an accidental overdraft fee that came from gilding.

Here are some additional stats you may find interesting.

Most gilded threads:

Users that gilded the most:
  1. 288 gildings
  2. 25 gildings
  3. 24 gildings
  4. 21 gildings
  5. 18 gildings

This comment was gilded most quickly, only 25 seconds after posting.
This comment was the first comment to be gilded.
Over the time period, there were 72.17 gilds per hour (GPH).

Don't forget that buying reddit gold isn't the only way to support reddit. The redditgifts marketplace has over 220 merchants with items for sale. Additionally, we're announcing a sale this weekend only as a gesture of our thanks. While supplies last, all reddit t-shirts are 25% off in the marketplace. If you have reddit gold, they are 40% off. Please make sure you’re logged into your reddit account with gold to take advantage of the additional discount.

Advertising is another way to support reddit. Recent changes to the self-serve advertising system have made it easier than ever to take out an ad. Whether you are launching a new company, or just want to tell the world about your new subreddit, the self-serve system is there for you.

We are also grateful to everyone who has turned off Adblock on reddit. While reddit is now whitelisted by Adblock for our ad policies, if you have installed Adblock previously you may still not be seeing reddit ads. If you can't afford gold or merch, please just keep contributing to the community by allowing ads, in addition to sharing your posts, comments and votes.

Once again, a giant thanks from the bottom of all of our hearts. We are humbled and inspired by all of you.

We continue to be astounded. Plus some answers to common questions.

reddit, we continue to be astounded! This weekend, when we first put up the progress bar, we never expected to blast through the daily target and exceed 500% before the day ended. It's been an amazing few days and we are absolutely floored by everyone’s dedication to this site and to each other — there’s so much “paying it forward” and helping each other out. Hitting our daily gold revenue targets means that gold can be a key part of reddit becoming a self-sustaining, community-supported platform.

We thought we’d also take this chance to answer some question we saw in the gold threads over the weekend, especially from users who are new to gold. Without further ado, here are some Common Gold Questions:

Q: What is reddit gold?

A: reddit gold is our premium subscription service. It gives you access to exclusive features and discounts with our partners. You can read more about it at reddit.com/gold/about.

Q: Can I buy gold for myself?
Click here to buy reddit gold

A: Yes! You can buy gold by going to reddit.com/gold.

Sometimes people think that you can only receive gold via the little “give gold” links underneath comments, by having someone give it to you (called "gilding" or having your comment "gilded") Au contraire — you can most certainly purchase it for yourself, and most people who have reddit gold do just that! Go ahead, you deserve it.

Q: Can I buy gold in bulk? I want to give gold away to comments and would rather buy in bulk instead of entering my payment info each time. Plus can I get a discount for buying in bulk?

A: Yes! You have multiple ways to do this, and you get a discount if you buy in bulk.

Buying gold for yourself: If you buy a year’s subscription, each month of gold is only $2.50, a 37.5% discount off the normal rate of $3.99 per month!

Buying gold creddits to gild: You can buy a bunch of “creddits” which allow you to gild lots of comments without having to enter your payment information each time. Buying any of the special bulk tiers of creddits will also net you the same 37.5% discount off the normal rate!

Q: What does server time mean? How does that work?

A: This question refers to this box shown in the screenshot shown on the right:

We launched it couple weeks ago, and you may have noticed it on your user profile. You can also see it on other user profiles if the user has elected to make it public.

What we wanted to do was convert the funds that users pay us into something that reflects how much of reddit you’re helping to support. reddit runs on hundreds of servers, and each of those servers costs a certain amount to run, so we averaged it all together to get a rough unit cost per server.

The "server time" number on your profile includes money you’ve contributed via buying reddit gold, buying reddit gold for someone else (which includes gilding), or buying ads through our self-serve system. “Gifts on your behalf” represent gold that someone has bought for you, either by gilding your comments or by buying gold for you from reddit.com/gold.

For a somewhat more involved technical explanation on how the number is generated, please refer to this post in /r/howredditworks.

Q: Other than buying ads or gold, how can I help support reddit?

A: One easy way to help the site is to disable AdBlock on reddit. We do have ads, and the more impressions they get, the more our clients like us. We work hard to ensure the ads we display are reddit-friendly. We don’t allow full-page ads or any type of flash. We also include a lot of internal-community ads which point to things like new subreddits. Disabling is simple: when viewing reddit, simply right click on your AdBlock icon and uncheck ‘Enabled for this site’.

Perhaps the best non-monetary way to support the site is to help make reddit a community which you’re proud to be a part of. Go check out your local subreddits (or consider starting your own), consider the reddiquette and help keep it alive, and be thoughtful when engaging with others. reddit is not special or unique because of the design of the site, it is special because of the community that contributes to the site. Every person reading this can help ensure that reddit continues to be worthy of your time and support.

Lastly a tidbit - we’re planning a fun bonus for everyone who helps contribute to hitting the 100% goal each day. Stay tuned!

46,000 votes later, and voting was a SOCKcess!

We wanted reddit socks, you wanted reddit socks, and our awesome friends over at Betabrand (who have been a gold partner for a while now and happen to have all kinds of sock expertise) wanted reddit socks too. So we got together with them, put together all kinds of ideas, and asked you guys which ones were best. 46,000 votes later, we have our results, and they are available for preorder!

Based on the votes and what socks we thought would go best together, we've created two different packs of three pairs each. You can buy the Arrows & Aliens set in the redditgifts marketplace (20% off for people with gold or redditgifts Elves!) or the Community Choice pack over at Betabrand (which has free US shipping through Halloween).

Here's how the voting went down:

For those of you who like pretty pictures more than graphs, here's the lineup of the socks in order from most-voted to least.

And here are some fun stats from the results:
  • On average, each person who voted chose 5.6 pairs of socks.
  • Even though we had more than 46,000 votes, they actually stabilized by the time we had received 5,000 responses.
  • 97.4% of people who answered voted for at least one of the six leading pairs of socks.
  • Several users also came up with the really awesome idea to create another pair--test socks please ignore--that got so many upvotes and comments that we had to make it a reality.
We're pretty excited about these socks, and we hope you are too. If you're too lazy to scroll back up, here are the links again: You can buy the Arrows & Aliens set in the redditgifts marketplace or the Community Choice pack over at Betabrand.

What was that?? *peers down the basement stairs*

It’s that time of year again… The time for pumpkin carving, apple picking, costume designing, and being scared shitless by creepy things you find on the internet. In honour of Halloween being right around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of some of the creepiest subreddits for your perusal.

Enjoy… if you dare.

  • /r/creepypasta: a subreddit that consists of short horror stories and urban legends
  • /r/creepy_gif: some of the most unnerving gifs you’ll find
  • /r/CemeteryPorn: images of graves of those who are no longer part of this world
  • /r/Ghosts: ghost stories, sightings, pictures… you name it
  • /r/imaginarymonsters: drawings of terrifying beasts from the minds of redditors and other artists
  • /r/scaredshitless: a compilation of scary stories, pictures, and videos
  • /r/LetsNotMeet: real-life stories from redditors about terrifying things that have happened
  • /r/nosleep: creepy stories told by redditors
  • /r/Paranormal: a subreddit dedicated to the discussion of anything paranormal
  • /r/shortscarystories: stories that will have you cowering in fear in only one paragraph
  • /r/Slender_Man: if you see a tall, thin man with no discernable facial features, you’d better hightail it out of there!
  • /r/truecreepy: a subreddit for truly creepy things
  • /r/welcometohell: welcome...
  • /r/fearme: just… just go there. No description is good enough.
  • /r/horror: for anything and everything having to do with horror
  • /r/creepy: from whence many of the above subreddits spawned

And here is a multireddit of all this creepiness.

Our favorite creepiness:

Did we miss any spooky subreddits? What frightening tales do you have?

Be a Frontend Engineer at reddit

$

0
We are seeking a talented developer with frontend skills to join us in San Francisco.

reddit is a cultural center of the internet, and the frontend is its ambassador. Many of our goals now and on the horizon are deeply rooted in the frontend, such as improving the experience of discovering new subreddits and facilitating meaningful and diverse community discourse.

At reddit, we have a notoriously small team of engineers (currently 10) who develop the core site. Engineers enjoy a large amount of autonomy and independence in how they solve problems. As a consequence of that, we are looking for someone who can wear many hats and approach the frontend from many angles. This is a challenging job, and requires a rare combination of traits:
  • Full-stack development expertise; expert-level HTML5/CSS/JS + strong backend programming skills.
  • Interest in designing user interfaces and experiences.
  • Experience architecting and implementing elegant technical solutions on the frontend.
  • Understanding of web development and its many layers: HTTP(S), servers like HAProxy and nginx, and web app programming environments like WSGI frameworks.
  • A deep passion and curiosity for online communities.
You'll also need to have or pick up a few skills on the job:
  • Large scale Python web development.
  • Working with SQL and NoSQL data stores, particularly Cassandra.
  • Developing and deploying in a Linux environment; using and customizing shell tools.
  • Deeply grokking reddit’s full codebase, community standards, and site culture.
If you have a background in most or all of the above, then odds are you have a lot of choices of how to spend your time. Consider reddit as a rare chance to shape millions of peoples' experience discovering each other (and themselves) on a frontier of internet community. Each and every day the human element of reddit surprises and captivates us, and we hope it will you, too. There are huge rewarding long term projects but also a ton of low hanging fruit (you shouldn't have to look around the site long to find some...). Just about any feature you touch contains something interesting to hack on that will affect how hundreds of thousands of people experience reddit daily.

If this sounds like an interesting challenge to you, . Feel free to ask us any questions in the comments.

A Server By Any Other Name

$

Not too long ago, we said that we wanted to find a way to thank everyone who helps us meet our reddit daily gold goal. As you may know, reddit runs on many hundreds of servers - you can see a bit of this by loading up reddit.com and looking in the far lower right corner and mousing over the “pi” symbol (a reference to one of the greatest cringe-worthy early movies about the internet). This will cause some data to appear about what server rendered that page:

The far-lower-right of your reddit.com window

As a small token of thanks, every day we exceed our gold goal, we will let everyone who bought gold or gilded someone band together to pick a name for one of our servers. To kick things off, we solicited a few server name suggestions from current gold members, and named the first few servers in this resplendent server naming ceremony:

Going forward, we’ve created a special subreddit for naming servers at /r/NameAServer. We’re still working out some of the kinks, but it’s been running all right for a couple nights now, so here’s how it works:

Click here to buy reddit gold

Each night, if we reach 100% of our daily reddit golden goal, everyone who bought or gave gold that day will be invited to a special thread in /r/NameAServer to submit nominations, curate suggestions, and collectively decide on a name. These names will go into a naming queue and every time a new server is brought online, it shall have a name from that queue bestowed upon it.

Over time, as the servers are named, you will be able to see these names show up in the page rendering data on the bottom, and you can also show off your named server to your friends/mother (or name them after your friends/mother).

Finally, we’ve released another gold feature - remember what links you’ve visited across computers: never click a link twice again! If you visit a link on one computer, it’ll show up purple across your other computers. Handy for those of us who use reddit while at work!

As the holiday season approaches, we want to thank all of you for continuing to support reddit. Lastly, don't forget to sign up for redditgifts Secret Santa! Last year in 2012 we set a Guinness World Record with over 44,000 people across 130 countries to participate in the largest Secret Santa Gift Exchange. Let's crush that record this year!

This Nov. 29th, reddit's 1st Livestream Brings the Black Friday Chaos to You

$

On Black Friday 2008, a retail employee was stampeded to death when a mob of shoppers broke down the doors of a store in Valley Stream, NY.

On Black Friday 2011, a savings hunter in Porter Ranch, California injured 20 people when she doused her fellow shoppers with pepper spray.

On Black Friday 2012, an argument about a parking space in Tallahassee ended with two shoppers being shot.

On Black Friday 2013, experience the Black Friday chaos and adventure from the safety of your own dwelling with the redditgifts shopping network.

Black Friday is absurd.

The day after thanksgiving has mutated into a disgusting, crowded, and sometimes dangerous national holiday in the US. It's the manic lovechild of a /r/Murica, /r/wheredidthesodago, and /r/hailcorporate threesome after one-too-many Watermelon martinis one night at Olive Garden. It's become an increasingly hyped and sprawling holiday ritual, but there's still some magic in a cultural tradition spending time with family, no matter how crass the motive. Unless you work in retail, that is. In which case, welcome to Hell.

In the face of such perversion we have decided not to turn our noses and hibernate, but rather to embrace the commercial chaos head on.

On Black Friday, we are hosting an EPIC 8 hour livestream on redditgifts.com and our youtube channel. It's going to be part home-shopping-network, part old-school-holiday-variety-show, part fundraiser telethon, and part Muppets Take Manhattan. We're going to be featuring amazing small merchants from the redditgifts marketplace, dynamite musical acts, hilarious comedians, appearances from celebrity redditors, and of course a Hoffman's two-toed sloth.

We know from traffic graphs during previous Thanksgiving holidays that many of you are stuck at home on Black Friday, rightfully scared to venture outside, and bored with family.

This year, while we can't save you from all the madness of the holiday season, we promise that from 12pm ET to 8pm ET we're going to do our best to entertain and amuse and bring some of the Black Friday spectacle to the safety of your own living room/bungalow/yurt/bunker. Consider this our grand experiment to put just a little humanity back into the soulless empty big box holiday.

Our show will be hosted by some of NYC's (and Toronto's) finest comedians, including:

Casey Jost - actor and comedian who is the head comedy writer of "Impractical Jokers" and a member of UCB's Harold Team "Good Girl")
Lisa Kleinman - actress, comedian, and lady person based out of Brooklyn. She is currently an actor on the UCB Maude Team Beige.
Benny Pearson - funmaker who has had multiple pursuits in the music industry, and he hopes to use his platform on RGSN to play with something sharp.
Sasheer Zamata - actress, writer, and comedienne living in NYC. She has a new web series called "Pursuit of Sexiness".
Yoni Lotan - actor, improviser, writer, and filmmaker living in New York City. (Just like every single person in NYC).
Nat & Marie - Writers, podcasters, and hosts of Canada’s longest running Internet trend barometer show.

You can see some of them in action in the preview below.

We will have in-studio musical performances by YC The CynicKiah VictoriaCharlieRED, and others. We also have MNN's Jay Miller presenting a very special "Midevenings" from our studio, video submissions from CollegeHumor's Pat Cassels and Jeff Rubin, Jake & Amir, Pee-wee Herman (via telephone), Joel Hodgson (from MST3K), /u/GovSchwarzenegger, and many more.

We are especially honored that Mike Rowe, one of our touchstones for the show, will be participating. Before Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe was a host on QVC and made comedy gold out of selling trinkets to the late night masses. His mischievous graveyard shift work is an inspiration to this project.

We'll be raising funds for classroom projects for DonorsChoose.org with the help of none other than Stephen Colbert. We'll be highlighting some great bitcoin deals from Bitcoin Black Friday, including a deal on reddit gold. We'll also have some surprises and special contributions from the reddit community like this moving collaboration from /u/indiefied and /u/Poem_For_Your_Sprog:
Sometimes, when I'm sleeping, I dream of it yet -
That day in November I'll never forget.
The sounds as they rushed and they crushed and they fell -
Their faces; their fury; that vision of Hell.
- The Ballad of Black Friday

See you all on Nov. 29th from 12pm - 8pm ET on redditgifts.com and youtube.com/reddit, and we will weather this storm together.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we also each want to take time out to some of the parts of reddit we're thankful for.

/u/chooter

/u/5days

/r/AnimalsBeingDerps makes me happy every day. I'm thankful that people post pictures of their goofy-looking pets caught in awkward moments. They're the best.

/u/hellohobbit

/u/ekjp

I'm grateful for an /r/boardgames post about adult games that are playable with kids.

/u/kickme444

I'm grateful that the reddit community has come together to support teachers every year.

/u/chromakode

/u/rram

The reddit admins' pets multi!

/u/dehrmann

I'm thankful for the mods. They put an incredible amount of work into keeping reddit awesome. And the community team. They deal with more shit than I can imagine.

/u/youngluck

This small sub, and the actions witnessed thereof, quite literally changed my life: /r/favors.

/u/highshelfofsteam

/r/writingprompts. It keeps my creative juices and novel aspirations flowing — even though I don't spend nearly as much time there as I should.

/u/freedomthebucket

I'm thankful that reddit is used to expose everyday awesome situations that wouldn't otherwise be known about, except for a few people.

I'm also thankful that reddit is used to shed light on really important situations that other forms of media simply wouldn't cover.

Some of the videos in /r/happycrowds make me extremely happy.

/u/kemitche

I'm thankful for "anti-hype" as information. redditors correcting misleading titles and articles gives me the context to enjoy and understand news, science and technology much better than just the source material.

/u/cupcake1713

I'm thankful for all of the educational subreddits like /r/askhistorians and /r/askscience. The moderators there are amazing, and the contributors always make it a worthwhile read whenever I find myself over there.

Also also, I found my job via the blog!

/u/bitcrunch

I'm thankful for the /r/gaymer"mom" - /u/Diogenes71. She first posted last year, and has "adopted" gaymers who can't come out to their parents.

I'm also thankful for the mods at all of the "random acts of ___" subreddits and the mods of /r/suicidewatch, who are some of the most kind, caring, and wise individuals I've ever seen.

/u/jenakalif

I'm really thankful for /r/askhistorians. This post blew my mind: I'm a typical college student in America and I'm going to a party. What should I expect if I was in the 1920s, 40s, 60s and 80s? What were the differences/similarities?

/u/krispykrackers

I'm thankful that, after 2 1/2 years of working here, when I find free time, I still really enjoy casually browsing reddit. That's how awesome this site and its community is. It's like working at a restaurant, eating every meal there, and still enjoying the food and company.

/u/aquilafiera

I'm really grateful for the /r/SecretSanta community. They've been really patient as we've turned the entire site upside down and have really been the superstars of our push for 100k Secret Santas.

/u/mrefish

I am thankful for the subreddit communities and their members who are willing to teach and contribute their expertise to anyone willing to learn.

/u/kirbyrules

I'm thankful for /r/Music and /r/ListenToThis, for sharing their favorite songs and providing me with excellent reddit.tv channels to listen to while redditing at reddit. One of my favorite discoveries from here includes the Of Monsters and Men version of "Kids". I'm also thankful for the /r/FoodPorn community for sharing their restaurant recommendations and recipes! Yumm....

/u/spladug

I too am thankful for /r/AskHistorians. In particular, this thread was really really good: What in your study of history has most humanized the past and its people for you? Sappymode: I'm also thankful for all the new friends reddit has brought me (including all of y'all!)

/u/garyjense

I am thankful for /r/fitness and /r/cocktails. Without the first, I'd feel a lot more guilty about the second.

/u/hueypriest

I am thankful for /r/LongDistance for helping me while my fiancée and I were thousands of miles apart. I'm thankful for /r/neutralpolitics and their difficult but important mission of discussing politics in an even-handed manner.

/u/pixelinaa

I am thankful for shareable links on reddit, because my husband sends me links every day to let me know he's thinking about me.

/u/iamapillow

As corny as this is, I am truly thankful for all of you. I admire how hard everyone works, and I love that I work for a company where each and every employee is so unbelievably passionate about what they do. (Also, I found my job on /r/forhire so definitely thankful for that subreddit!) I'm also thankful for /r/dadjokes, and now /r/dadjokesinhistory. Never fails to make me laugh and bring a smile to my face.

New Default Subreddits? omgomgomg

$
0
0
It’s that time again — time to update the default subreddits! For those of you who don’t know, this is the set of subreddits logged-out users and new users see as their front page before they customize their subscriptions. It's been quite a while since we’ve made major changes to that list of subreddits (though we recently added /r/news to fill a gap that was missing), and we figured that it was high time to shake things up a bit on the front page. This is just the first small step in a much longer process for updating the front page, so we hope you all enjoy the new content!

The new list we’ve come up with was based off of a few key factors: traffic to the subreddits, rate of subscriber increase, average number of users online, and number of submissions/comments being posted. We’ve tried our best to make sure that the new additions are fairly “general,” and a few of the new additions are also there to help cover some areas that have never had a home on the front page. With these updates, we hope there will be an appropriate default for many of the most popular topics.

Without further ado, here's the new list, excluding the official defaults of /r/announcements and /r/blog (new additions in bold):

  1. /r/adviceanimals
  2. /r/AskReddit
  3. /r/aww
  4. /r/bestof
  5. /r/books
  6. /r/earthporn
  7. /r/explainlikeimfive
  8. /r/funny
  9. /r/gaming
  10. /r/gifs
  11. /r/IAmA
  12. /r/movies
  13. /r/music
  14. /r/news
  15. /r/pics
  16. /r/science
  17. /r/technology
  18. /r/television
  19. /r/todayilearned
  20. /r/videos
  21. /r/worldnews
  22. /r/wtf
We know many of you will wonder what happened to /r/politics and /r/atheism and why they were removed from the default set. We could give you a canned corporate answer or a diplomatic answer that is carefully crafted for the situation. But since this is reddit, we’re going to try things a bit differently and give you the real answer: they just weren't up to snuff. Now, don't get us wrong, there still ARE good parts about them. Overall, they just haven't continued to grow and evolve like the other subreddits we've decided to add.
This change will largely affect logged-out users and new accounts, so if you already have an account and you've ever subscribed to or unsubscribed from any subreddit you won’t notice any difference from these changes. To update your personal subscription list, just visit the "my subreddits" page at http://www.reddit.com/subreddits/mine

This is just the first step in a larger process, so keep your eyes peeled for some other updates to the default set in the future and be sure to check out our multireddits beta and leave some feedback!

Promote your crowdfunded project on reddit — for free!

Seasons greetings, reddit!

In the past, we’ve enjoyed donating free adspace to some deserving groups groups of people, who would benefit from some promotion on reddit, such as small businesses and Nonprofits. We do it to show our appreciation for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, and to recognize the amazing services and products they offer.

After a short hiatus from our past ad donation campaigns, we're once again opening up our self-serve advertising platform to another group who deserve our recognition and support — crowdfunding projects!

We'd like your help. If you or someone you know has a crowdsourced fundraising campaign (ie. Kickstarter, Crowdtilt, Adopt-A-Classroom, etc) that they'd like to advertise to the world's best internet community, please send them our way.

To claim your free ad:

  1. Create an ad using your reddit account:
    • You can choose "link" or "text". These work like organic reddit posts — a link ad will link externally to your projects URL.
    • A text post will link to the comment section with your text sticked in a box at the top. The text box provides space for describing your project or including other information with your link. Fill out the two boxes, then click "next".
    • When you've done the above, and clicked "next", you will arrive at your dashboard.
    • Stop here! Don't set dates or pay.
  2. Email us the link to your dashboard with the subject line: "Free Ad!"
  3. Lastly — and VERY IMPORTANTLY — in the email, give us a time frame when your project will run, so we can make sure your ad is live while people are still able to donate.

We’ll review the emails and give 100,000 impressions each to the first 250 folks with deserving crowdsourcing projects.

We have reached our goal! Thank you for all who participated!

These ads will appear on the front page of reddit throughout the month of December. Even if you don’t have a project to advertise, keep an eye out for any projects you may be interested in helping!

In the meantime, we’d love to plug some projects that are near and dear to reddit’s heart:

  • redditdonate.com
Chosen and embedded by subreddits, the donate button allows reddit communities to raise awareness and channel donations directly to like-minded 501(c)(3) nonprofits.
  • reddit’s own crowdtilt
a redditor fundraising heaven, where Crowdtilt and reddit staff have teamed up to build one group funding platform for everything from a $100 meetup to a $100k fundraiser–and anything in between. Check them out for your next fundraiser!
  • And don't forget to check out /r/crowdfunding and /r/crowdfundingprojects!

Real-Life Karma: an update on some altruistic stories

With the billions of things happening on reddit at any given moment, it can be easy to lose track of what happens beyond the original post. We followed up with the OPs of three stories that touched redditors’ hearts to get updates on:

For Lucas, the 3 year old with a rare disease (Hyper IGM Syndrome) who needed a bone marrow transplant in 2011, reddit banded together to donate over $50,000, so his family could move to the city where he needed to receive treatment. Lucas’ dad was so touched by the generosity he experienced that he got a reddit tattoo of a snoo with a heart on its chest.

Today, thanks to that treatment, Lucas is now 5 years old. Lucas’ father Luis shared how the response from /r/assistance affected their lives:
In the days and weeks around reddit’s outpouring of support, we were obviously overwhelmed. There is no life experience that prepares you for that kind of event… Perhaps just as important as those few weeks at the end of 2011 are the months that followed..... We received a steady stream of care packages, cards, PM’s and emails while we were in the hospital... There are still constant reminders, and they help us remember the kindness and generosity we want Lucas and Liam to learn as they grow up.

On March 14th we celebrated Lucas’ one year transplant anniversary andbackpackwayne helped us (as always) spread the word on reddit so everyone could see how well Lucas was doing. While his progress has been slightly behind the original projections, he’s still doing very well… we have no reason to believe he won’t make a full recovery and lead a normal life.

Personally, the one thing that has been surprisingly better than expected in all of this is my Snoo tattoo. Every time someone notices it, I get to share the whole inspirational story all over again.

Liam and Lucas

David, a close friend of Lucas’ family, shared his thoughts on the experience:
reddit has power. The power of millions of people coming together to change lives in meaningful ways. When my now fiancee's sister and husband realized their son, Lucas, had a rare disease and needed a bone marrow transplant, things were looking rough… We took photos of Lucas telling his story and posted it to r/assistance. The reaction started slow, with supporters donating $5 here, $10 there... but the magic of Reddit soon began to happen... We were receiving an amazing outpouring of love in our thread from other redditors: tales of support, hardship, sympathy, and hope…. Our lives and perspectives were forever changed by the kindness, generosity, and love shown by strangers on this website. We remain in shock and awe of the power of reddit to this day.

We cannot thank each of you enough for what you've done for our family, but there are other families just like ours that need your help too. Please embrace the redditor spirit and sign up to be a bone marrow donor - you could change the life of someone just like Lucas! http://www.bethematch.org and The Immune Deficiency Foundation.

In January 2012, a redditor shared the story of Anthony Omari, who was attacked with a machete while single-handedly defending a Kenyan orphanage.

The OP originally posted asking for $2,000 to finish the fence to keep the orphanage safe, but thanks to the community, they were able to go above and beyond. They had this to share:
When I originally posted the photo of Omari with a small appeal for help back in January, 2012, I had no idea what to expect from reddit—certainly not the incredible outpouring of support and encouragement we received from the reddit community. In less than one week more than 3,000 people from dozens of countries across the world donated over $80,000 to Faraja Children’s Home in Kenya, essentially saving the orphanage from closing and giving the children a safer home and more hopeful future. If you didn’t see the 1-year update about how some of the money was spent, check it out! We are currently trying to find sponsors for all 37 children at Faraja to ensure they will be able to continue their education past the age of 13 (when Kenya’s free public education ends).

All of us at the Longonot Education Initiative and Faraja Children’s Home cannot thank the reddit community enough for your kindness, generosity and the support you gave Omari, his family, and the Faraja children in their time of need. We are all so grateful. Thanks for being so awesome!

Finally, just a few weeks ago on reddit, a 2 year old girl undergoing cancer treatment made a wish for a pizza party that became a “global pizza reddit signal.” In her mom Lauren’s words:

Ever since the "Pizza Bonanza" (that's what we have been calling it!) has happened to our family, we continue, each day, to be extremely humbled and left speechless by the outpouring of support from complete and total strangers. Even now I struggle to put into words the effect it has had on our family. Not only did we have well over 20 pizzas delivered in honor of my little girl's struggle, but someone was kind enough to include links, on the original Reddit post, to our Facebook page, Hope For Hazel; our blog; and our donation page. Because of the thoughtfulness of this individual, we have close to 10,000 likes on the Facebook page, I had nearly 70,000 hits on my blog for several days straight and so far have received over $13,000 in donations!

…To know that so many people have cared enough to take the extra steps to read about my daughter, and the fight that she is enduring, has been nothing less than extraordinary. People from around the globe continue to send well wishes, prayers, letters and packages to Hazel, and personal stories of struggle and triumph that all encourage me in ways that they may never understand…

Another wonderful thing that has happened is that I have been able to use this marvelous and uplifting story as a platform to raise awareness for childhood cancer… Now, I can point people in a direction to learn more and to support a community of families who desperately need our help!

I urge you to learn more about childhood cancer from sites like www.thetruth365.org, www.curesearch.org, www.cookiesforkidscancer.org, www.stbaldricks.org and www.alexslemonade.org

These are only three of the altruistic acts, big and small, that redditors do every day. From volunteering to donate kidneys to helping those in need buy a hearing aid to supporting a teacher who sheltered her students during a tornado to randomly gifting another reddit user a new monitor to filling a teacher’s empty bookshelves, we know there are countless stories about redditors out there making the world a better place.

We’re really proud to be a part of this community, and can’t wait to see the amazing things that you all do in the future. We hope you continue to share your and others’ stories of redditors making the world a better place, starting here in the comments with stories we weren’t able to update, and in future posts. We’d love to hear them.

P.S. If you know any teachers that need help getting classroom supplies, we have more volunteers to donate to teachers than teachers who have signed up for our teacher gift exchange, now accepting signups through September 3rd. Send the teachers in your life this link!

We would like to take some time today to bring attention to a very important, completely real topic. Here at
reddit, we feel that the Lambeosaurus is clearly the best dinosaur, and that no better dinosaurs have existed or will exist in the future.

Consider the following Lambeosaurus facts:

The Lambeosaurus is known for its distinctive hollow crest on the top of its head.

The Lambeosaurus was the narwhal of the dinosaur age.

Clinical trials have shown that groups discussing Lambeosaurus are 47% more likely to have feelings of fulfillment compared to groups discussing other, lesser dinosaurs.

The Lambeosaurus has yet to be recognized by Chrome's dictionary.

The future of the Lambeosaurus is very bright. If you would like to share your thoughts on how the Lambeosaurus is truly the greatest, please leave a message at +1 (831) 687-8683.

The Day We Fight Back Against Mass Surveillance

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
- First Amendment, U.S. Constitution

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
- Fourth Amendment, U.S. Constitution

But whatever our differences may have been in the past, we strongly agree that the dragnet collection of millions of Americans’ phone records every day — whether they have any connection at all to terrorism — goes far beyond what Congress envisioned or intended to authorize.
More important, we agree it must stop.
 - Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.)  & Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (Wis.), Co-sponsors of the USA FREEDOM Act (H.R.3361, S. 1599),  The Case for NSA Reform

Today we must fight back against mass, suspicionless surveillance. Today we must protect both our civil liberties and the digital tools connecting us all.

Indiscriminate bulk surveillance programs by the NSA and their allies (detailed below) violate the First and Fourth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, which protect citizens' right to speak and associate anonymously, guard against unreasonable searches and seizures, and protect their right to privacy.

In addition to individual privacy issues, these surveillance programs are damaging for online businesses like reddit. These programs undermine the basic freedom, innovation, and economic opportunity that the Internet enables.  The potential for a business to be legally and secretly compelled to violate the privacy of both foreign and domestic users casts a pall over any U.S.-based site. In turn, this threatens to place U.S.-based internet companies, one of the most dynamic and booming sectors of our economy, at a global disadvantage.

Fortunately, there are real opportunities for reform, but they need our support. Please consider joining us in taking action today. Together we can push back against powers that seek to observe, collect, and analyze our every digital action. Together, we can make it clear that such behavior is not compatible with democratic governance. Together, if we persist, we will win this fight.

If you're in the U.S., Call Congress today. Dial 202-552-0505 or click here to enter your phone number and have the call tool connect you. Ask your legislators to oppose the FISA Improvements Act (a bill that attempts to legalize bulk data collection of phone records), support the USA Freedom Act (a bill that works to curtail NSA surveillance abuses), and enact protections for non-Americans. Details on these bills and other legislation can be found below.

Here's what you should say:
I'd like Senator/Representative __ to support and co-sponsor H.R. 3361/S. 1599, the USA Freedom Act. I would also like you to oppose S. 1631, the so-called FISA Improvements Act. Moreover, I'd like you to work to prevent the NSA from undermining encryption standards and to protect the privacy rights of non-Americans.
If you're not in the U.S., demand that privacy protections be instituted.

You can also join in one of the offline protests happening today around the world. A partial list is available at thedaywefightback.org/events.

Below are detailed resources on what the NSA is doing, what legislation is out there, and common excuses for NSA surveillance—and how to bust them, courtesy of the EFF.

Please join us in the discussion in the comments here and in /r/thedaywefightback and /r/Stand.

Here’s just some of what we’ve learned, or had confirmed, in 2013:

  • Collecting call records and contact lists
    • The NSA collects virtually every phone call record in the United States—that’s who you call, who calls you, when, for how long, and sometimes where. (Guardian)
    • The NSA "is harvesting hundreds of millions of contact lists from personal e-mail and instant messaging accounts around the world, many of them belonging to Americans." (Washington Post)
  • Collecting data from the fiber-optic backbone of the Internet
    • The NSA is collecting "communications on fiber cables and infrastructure as data flows past," as part of what it calls "upstream" collection, including content and metadata of emails, web activity, chats, social networks, and everything else. (Washington Post)
    • NSA "has secretly broken into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centers around the world" and has "positioned itself to collect at will from hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans." (Washington Post)
  • Collecting email and SMS messages
    • The NSA "is searching the contents of vast amounts of Americans’ e-mail and text communications into and out of the country, hunting for people who mention information about foreigners under surveillance, according to intelligence officials". (New York Times)
    • The NSA "is winning its long-running secret war on encryption, using supercomputers, technical trickery, court orders and behind-the-scenes persuasion to undermine the major tools protecting the privacy of everyday communications in the Internet age." (New York Times and ProPublica)
  • Monitoring people’s porn usage
    • The NSA has "has been gathering records of online sexual activity and evidence of visits to pornographic websites as part of a proposed plan to harm the reputations of those whom the agency believes are radicalizing others through incendiary speeches." (Washington Post)
  • Monitoring online gaming communities
    • The NSA and GHCQ spied on online games, including World of Warcraft and Second Life. (ProPublica)
  • So much more
    • The NSA "is secretly piggybacking on the tools that enable Internet advertisers to track consumers, using "cookies" and location data to pinpoint targets for government hacking and to bolster surveillance." (Washington Post)
    • NSA "officers on several occasions have channeled their agency’s enormous eavesdropping power to spy on love interests." (Wall Street Journal)

There are two major bills that U.S. voters need to understand. The first is a bill that works to curtail NSA surveillance abuses. The other is a bill that attempts to legalize bulk data collection of phone records.

Note that there is no single bill that comprehensively addresses all the problems of NSA surveillance overreach. That’s why it’s important to see the current legislative proposals as a floor, not as a ceiling, and to continue to push for more reforms and privacy-protective amendments.

The USA Freedom Act (S. 1599) is a bipartisan bill introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI).

If passed, this bill would be a substantial improvement to America’s laws regarding mass surveillance. It brings new levels of transparency to the FISA court, introduces a special advocate to champion civil liberties in the FISA court, and appears to create new statutory limits on mass surveillance by the NSA.

However, this bill is a floor, not a ceiling. The bill only touches on a few of the issues surrounding the NSA’s invasive and unconstitutional surveillance. There are a variety of improvements that can and should be made to ensure the bill effectively reforms NSA surveillance and to ensure the law is less susceptible to being undermined by aggressive legal arguments in the FISA court or elsewhere. In particular, the bill should clarify in plain language that bulk surveillance is illegal and the bill should also prevent the FBI from issuing National Security Letters without prior review by a judge. The bill should also include language to stop the NSA from undermining international encryption standards, and it should have stronger language to protect the privacy of people outside of the United States.

That’s why it’s important to see the USA FREEDOM Act as one step in the right direction, but with many more steps that need to follow.

Additional resources:

On the other hand, the FISA Improvements Act is a bill written by the intelligence community and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). It is designed to codify the controversial bulk telephone records surveillance program of the NSA.

If the FISA Improvements Act (S. 1631) were to pass, the NSA would continue to collect telephone records of hundreds of millions of Americans not suspected of any crime. The bill also seeks to permit the NSA to restart the bulk collection of Internet communication records—an extremely invasive, secret program the government attempted under dubious legal ground but abandoned because it wasn't effective.

Other resources:
  • A coalition letter of 54 civil liberties and public interest groups opposing the FISA Improvements Act
  • The ACLU’s blog post on the FISA Improvements Act
  • EFF’s alert about the FISA Improvements Act

What’s missing?

Much more work needs to done as these two bills only touch on a few of the numerous issues with the NSA’s activities. The bills don’t address problems like NSA efforts tosabotage encryption standards, they don’t effectively tackle the issue of collecting information on people outside of the United States, and they don’t address theauthoritythat the government is supposedly using to tap the data links between service provider data centers, such as those owned by Google and Yahoo.

The bills also don’t address a key issue that the government uses to inhibit lawsuits contesting the spying: excessive secrecy. For instance, it won't deal with the major over-classification problems or thestate secrets privilege, the latter of which is used aggressively to prevent litigation from getting to a court decision on whether the spying is unconstitutional.

These two bills also leave out a clause appearing in Sen. Ron Wyden'sbill, which provides important guidelines to obtainstanding in legal cases against spying.

That’s why Internet activists are advocating to stop the FISA Improvements Act, promote the USA FREEDOM Act, and push for substantial reforms beyond what is currently in the USA FREEDOM Act.

Common Excuses for NSA Surveillance—and How to Bust Them

courtesy of EFF

I have nothing to hide from the government, so why should I worry?

There are a few ways to respond to this, depending on what you think will work best for the person raising the question.
  • Point out how mass surveillance leaves you at the mercy of not only the NSA, but also the DEA, the FBI and even the IRS. We know that the government claims that any evidence of a “crime” can be sent to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.
  • Tell them that, even if you don’t think you have something to hide, it’s possible the government thinks you do, or can create some concern about you (or your friends or loved ones). There are so many laws and regulations on the books, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner said the Congressional Research Servicedid not have the resources to count them all.  One legal expert has argued that the average person likely commits three felonies a day without ever realizing. So, you may be technically breaking a law you have no idea about.
  • Emphasize that we all benefit from a system that allows privacy. For example, when journalists can speak to sources without the specter of surveillance it helps fuel investigative journalism and the free flow of information. This is not just a hypothetical—the Department of Justicesubpoenaed the phone records of Associated Press journalists in an effort to track down government whistleblowers. And it’s not just journalists. Activists, political organizers, lawyers, individuals conducting sensitive research, businesses that want to keep their strategies confidential, and many others rely on secure, private, surveillance-free communication.

Isn’t the NSA using the mass spying to stop terrorists?

Even the NSA cannot point to a single terrorist attack they’ve stopped using the Patriot Act phone surveillance program that sweeps up virtually every phone record in the United States. They’ve thrown out many numbers claiming that the information was helpful in some capacity, including repeatedly claiming that it thwarted some 54 attacks, but those numbershave been thoroughly debunked.

One example the NSA points to is known as the “Zazi case.” However, in that case, the Associated Press reported that the government could have easily stopped the plot without the NSA program, under authorities that comply with the Constitution. Sens. Ron Wyden and Mark Udallhave been saying this for a long time. Intelligence officials also cite a case in which the telephone records program reportedly helped identify a Somali man in San Diego who sent several thousand dollars to al-Shabaab, a militant group in East Africa. However, this case never involved a terrorist plot, nor did it involve a direct threat to U.S. national security. An independent oversight board found no evidence that mass collection of telephone records was useful in the investigation.

That’s the point here: we can stop terrorists with law enforcement authorities that this country has been using for decades. We don’t need to upend the Constitution to keep the nation safe.

The government will not abuse its power.

Some people believe that the government will never abuse its power, especially when the party they support is in office.  You should remind these people that the government has a long history of overstretching its surveillance powers and using that information to try to blackmail people. Examples of this include the NSA spying onMartin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, and even some sitting senators in the 1960s. Imagine how Sen. Joe McCarthy’s investigations might have gone if he had access to this kind of spying.

We already have evidence of abuse of power. We know that the NSA analysts were using their surveillance powers totrack their ex-wives and husbands, and other love interests. They even had a name for it, LOVEINT.  The FISA court has alsocited the NSA for violating or ignoring court orders for years at a time. And those are just self-reported abuses. An independent investigation might reveal even more.

Allowing mass spying is patriotic.

Stopping untargeted seizure of information is one of the key reasons we fought the War of Independence and drafted the Fourth Amendment.  During colonial times, the "crime" was tax evasion—remember the Boston Tea Party?  The British crown issued Writs of Assistance, which were general warrants that allowed the British authorities to search through anyone’s papers in order to find those who were skirting the taxes.  American patriot James Otis Jr. argued against the “hated writs” but lost his case in the British courts.  John Adams noted that from that case, “the child independence was born.”

Since that time, warrants have had to specify the persons and places searched. Mass surveillance by the NSA does neither.  In short, one of our country’s founding principles is the prohibition on mass searches and seizures.

Kids today (or my friends) post everything they do on Facebook or Twitter, why should we care if the government can see too?

What people choose to put on Facebook or Twitter (or Instagram or Tumblr or some other service) is almost always curated.  People put the best or sometimes the worst things that happen to them online, butstudies show they still keep things private, and restrict the audience for other information.  A new poll shows young peoplemay even be more privacy conscious than older adults.

We all know someone whose Facebook feed continued to show happy pictures even as they went through a terrible breakup or divorce.  The point of privacy is control over the information that is available about you. Some people choose to share more, some choose to share less, but nearly everyone wants the power to pick and choose what information is available about them to their friends and to strangers, like future employers or NSA agents.

Google and Facebook have my information, so why shouldn’t the NSA?

There are many privacy problems with how the giant Internet companies gather and use so much of your personal data. However, Google and Facebook do not have the power to arrest you and, unlike government surveillance, there are other choices for communication tools. For example, you can use DuckDuckGo instead of Google search.

Remember: while we may not like how companies collect a lot of our information, they are not under the same requirement to follow the Fourth Amendment. We need to protect the private information held by companies too, but the Constitution provides a foundation that always protects our communications from the prying eyes of government.

It’s just metadata, so why should I care?
For the mass phone record collection program, the NSA has said it is not “listening in” to telephone calls.  Instead they are collecting a record of everyone you call, who calls you, when you’re on the phone, the length of your phone call, and at times, evenyour location.

This "metadata" can be as invasive as the content of your conversations. It can reveal your religious and political views, who you are dating (and when you break up), who your spouse and children are, your movements, and even information your closest friends and family don’t know, such as medical conditions.

Additionally, the government is getting more than just metadata. We also know the government has obtained online content, including email, under separate programs, and used the data based on a guess that you are 51 percent likely to be foreign, byscanning large a portion of the total number of emails entering and exiting the United States. Metadata is only a part of the government spying programs.

Decimating Our Ads Revenue

dec·i·matetransitive verb
1: to take a tenth from the whole (more info...)

Today we are announcing that we will donate 10% of our advertising revenue receipts in 2014 to non-profits chosen by the reddit community. Whether it’s a large ad campaign or a $5 sponsored headline on reddit, we intend for all ad revenue this year to benefit not only reddit as a platform but also to support the goals and causes of the entire community.

At the end of this year, after closing our books, we will solicit nominations from all of you for non-profits and then hold an election based off of eligible nominees for where we should donate the funds. Funds will be disbursed proportionally based on percentage of votes amongst the top 10 non-profits.

We want to show that advertising doesn’t just support the reddit platform, it also directly supports the causes and goals of reddit as a whole.

FAQ:

Q: How will you keep this from going awry due to trolling and vote-stuffing?

A: My goodness, this is the internet, isn’t it? That does make this plan a little complicated. Nevertheless, we will try:

First, I want to say right now (and will say again at year-end when we do the nominations and voting) that this isn’t a game. It will be real money going to real causes doing real things in the world. You can make a real difference. That’s a good reason to put aside the game-playing and be serious.

Secondly, we reserve the right to control the entire process and intervene if we believe there are shenanigans. For example, non-profit nominees will be limited to verified 501(c)(3) organizations, and we will filter out suggestions that seem to be clearly trolling. We’ll also apply our usual anti-vote-manipulation code to ensure integrity in voting. Lobbying and campaigning for one non-profit or another will be fine (e.g. explaining why one is better than the other) but trying to cheat with votes will not be allowed.

Ultimately, it will be up to all of you what happens - if things go well, the community will be responsible for disbursing a very real amount of money to a set of causes of your choice. If it doesn’t go well - then we’ll simply just pick by ourselves. We hope you'll help us make this successful!

Staying Gold

It's been a few months now since the last couple of blog posts related to reddit gold (#1 and #2), and today we have a few more updates about the program to share.

Gilding submissions

The ability to give people reddit gold for comments that you particularly appreciate (by "gilding" their comment) was added in November 2012 and there are always tons of excellent comments being gilded all over the site, but it hasn't been possible to do the same thing for submissions... until now. Gold can now be given to the user that submitted a link or self-post, in much the same way as for comments — click the "give gold" link below the submission.

However, one difference for submissions is that gilding can only be done from the comments page, and the gold star showing which submissions have been gilded will also not be visible from listings such as your front page, /r/all, or the subreddit or multireddits that the post is shown in. This is to avoid having gilded submissions receive more attention solely due to being gilded.

Custom saving categories

Users with reddit gold already have access to a slightly better "save" feature than normal— they're able to save comments as well as submissions, and also able to view their saved items based on which subreddit they came from.

Today, the ability to save comments is moving out of the gold feature list and becoming available to all reddit users, and gold users are getting access to another tool for organizing their saved items. When saving something, they can now choose a custom category to save the item into.

So to commemorate saving comments becoming available to all, here's the current top 10 comments saved the most number of times by gold users:
  1. /u/johnnywebber in "What is a skill someone can learn in 6 months that will impress employers on a resume?"
  2. /u/A_I_D_A_N in "Which websites do you usually visit when you are bored of reddit?"
  3. /u/ryans01 in "I just don't care about myself."
  4. /u/_shnazzy in "24 Awesome Skills to Learn for Free Online"
  5. /u/PEE_ALL_OVER_ME in "What is something I could teach myself in 5 minutes or less that would benefit me the rest of my life?"
  6. /u/mrsclause2 in "What are some meals that are simple to make, but easy to impress people with?"
  7. /u/coconutwaters in "What is a subreddit you think everyone should check out at least once, and why?"
  8. /u/tritter211 in "What is the biggest way people waste money?"
  9. /u/brother_dean in "If I have FIVE hours everyday dedicated to becoming more fit, what should I do?"
  10. /u/gabrielle1106 in "Writers of Reddit, what are exceptionally simple tips that make a huge difference in other people's writing?"
reddit gold "gift codes"

We also fairly recently added the ability to buy a gift code for reddit gold, which will give you a short code that can be redeemed for gold by someone else (or you). These are mostly useful if you have a friend/relative who you want to buy gold for, but you don't know their reddit username (often because they don't want to tell you, surely because you would be consumed by jealousy about all the witty comments they post).

Gold partner updates

reddit gold partners were introduced last June, and since then we've slowly been expanding the deals available to people with reddit gold. Here are some of the newest offers we've added from some awesome companies, including our first "international" partner with WeTransfer (based in Amsterdam):
  • Barkbox - 20% off a subscription to have monthly dog goodies delivered.
  • Bridgford Jerky - 20% off various meat jerky.
  • Lyft - $30 off your first ride.
  • SparkFun Electronics - $20 off over $50 orders of electronic components.
  • WeTransfer - 50% off a WeTransfer Plus membership for transferring files.
Remember to keep an eye on /r/goldbenefits to find out about new partners as they're added, which is always accessible from the "gold perks" tab in the sidebar on your front page if you have gold.

Edit: thanks for the gold!

And as always, thanks for helping support reddit by buying gold, both for yourselves and for others. We've managed to hit our daily gold goal quite often, which means that lots of our servers are adopting names chosen by gold buyers, and things are overall just looking very positive about making those darn green and red lines finally meet up, even despite recent decisions involving giving away a bunch of money.

Welcome Lilly, Nicole, Chris, Ismail, Erica, Cynthia, Max, and Chris!

It’s our pleasure to announce 8 new reddit employees! It's been 5 months since our last announcement, and since then we've grown to 39 employees. Please join us in welcoming these new additions to the reddit team. As per tradition, we’ll let each new hire introduce themselves to you individually:

Lilly Oh (/u/hellohobbit), self-serve ad sales & support
I was on reddit a lot in college and now I work here! I guide anyone who wants to promote something on reddit in the right direction, with the ultimate goal to make ads better for all of us. I grew up in Southern California, went to school in Northern California, and now live in NYC, where I think a lot about what it's like to live in a place with four distinct seasons. When I’m not on reddit I make art, eat a lot of cheese, and try to cook dinner every night. If you have any suggestions for life-changing recipes, send them my way! My favorite subreddits include /r/food, /r/happycrowds, and /r/morbidreality.

Nicole Clark (/u/taxidermyunicornhead), HR generalist
Hi reddit, I am the new HR Generalist. I am a native San Franciscan, I studied Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphics in college. I love to bake, crochet, and am currently reading as much magical realism as I can get my hands on. I have a cat named Cannoli, and we are mutually obsessed with each other. You can check her out on the redditpets multi (/m/redditpets) and also become obsessed with her. I look forward to supporting the amazing reddit staff so they can focus on the reddit community and making reddit more awesome.

Chris Khosrovani (/u/ckk524), sales associate
Hey everyone, what an honor it is to work at reddit. Over the past few years reddit has become like therapy for me, and I’m so grateful to the community for the amazing and thoughtful content. Before reddit, I was working at a large ad agency and like so many people here, browsed reddit more than actually doing my job, so when I saw the post on /r/nycjobs, I had to apply. When I’m not ogling smoked meats on /r/bbq or yelling at tourists on /r/nyc, I like to ride my bicycle around the city and explore places that normal New Yorkers wouldn’t go. I'm also a huge Beatles fan and recently started collecting their vinyls. I’m really looking forward to helping the sales team continue to grow.

Ismail Jadun (/u/pinwale), doing all things international
Hi reddit! It's so awesome to be here at reddit! I'll be helping to make reddit grow & become better at serving our international redditors. Did you know that you can help translate reddit into your language at /r/i18n? Also, check out /r/tldraroundtheworld for some pretty interesting international threads! So holla at me and you might get a pinwale datagram!

Erica Carter (/u/liltrixxy), customer service representative
Hi reddit. I'm an aspiring old cat lady who was originally drawn in to reddit by cat gifs and hilarious user comments. I'm an enthusiastic redditgifts participant who is also lucky enough to be helping others enjoy the exchanges and Marketplace through my work with reddit. In my free time, I can usually be found playing video games with my family, watching Mr Show, or taking photos. My three cats are Captain Cheeseburger, Doctor Donut, and Professor Pickles. My favorite subreddits are /r/secretsanta, /r/buffy, /r/aww, and /r/askreddit.

Cynthia Hickson (/u/bluemoon3689), New York office manager
Hello everyone. I’m the office manager for the New York office. I’m extremely happy to be here. I’m a native New Yorker, and my job will be working with the WeWork building management team and on a bunch of other office related tasks and special projects. No two days are the same, and I like that about reddit. Every day I’m here, I learn something new. So far my favorite subreddits are /r/horror, /r/AskScience, and /r/AskReligion. Once again, HAPPY TO BE HERE. Great staff at reddit.

Max Green (/u/maxgprime), Salt Lake City office manager
Hi reddit! I am the Office Manager of the Utah office. I was born and raised in Utah. I’ve worked in politics since I was 15. After 10 years of public life I decided to try something new and joined the redditgifts team. For the last two years, I worked for the largest gay rights policy and advocacy organization in Utah. Part of my job will be to guide us in our efforts to be more connected to our communities here in Utah, and to actively participate in important conversations like Utah’s civil rights issues, and our archaic liquor laws. I’ve played the piano since I was 2 (23 years), I am a thin mint addict, and I’ve never been skiing or snowboarding even though I am a life-long Utahn. I am very excited to be a part of this great team!

Chris Dary (/u/umbrae), frontend engineer
Hey folks! I'm umbrae and I'll be joining the engineering team, particularly working to add more features to reddit with chromakode — product and frontend stuff. You may know me from /r/serendipity, a bot driven subreddit I created to find new interesting subreddits. I've been thinking about communities and reddit particularly for many years and I'm so psyched to be able to work full-time on the thing that's been a big part of my online life. Favorite subreddits: /r/fantasy (Nice work, contributing authors who post there regularly!), /r/woodworking, and /r/daddit.

If you’d like to work at reddit, we have openings! Check out /r/redditjobs and redditgifts.com/jobs for the latest. If you’re looking for a job in general (not just reddit), consider reading our best practice feedback based on the resumes we’ve received in the past. None of this is possible without the support of you, the reddit community.

The reason we’re all here is because of you, the community. We love the work we do and feel very privileged to be part of a site and community that you have shaped. Thank you for your continued support of reddit!

How to use reddit.tv and a sampling of the most popular videos and channels to get you started

$

reddit.tv was first launched in 2009 to help you speed through all the video content on reddit. It allows you to easily flip through the hottest videos of the day and see what’s going on in your favorite subreddits or what’s popular on reddit from your favorite websites and platforms. The last major update to reddit.tv was in 2011. /u/mustardhamsters with /u/excuses created a new reddit.tv layout with an HTML5 player, bigger video screen, and a longer and more dynamic video stream showcasing upcoming videos.

How to use reddit.tv
When you visit reddit.tv, you’re seeing a stream of the hottest videos posted to reddit from /r/videos. If you scroll down to the thumbnails, you’ll see a list of channels (videos, music, etc.) that allow you to watch the hottest videos from a subreddit of your choice. We’ve found the subreddits with the most video submissions and most general appeal and put them there by default.

You can customize your reddit.tv channel experience by creating channels or seeing the most popular videos from your favorite site. To do this, click the first thumbnail that reads “add channel.” From here you can type in a subreddit name (ex. /r/space) or site (ex. pbs.org) and click “save.” That channel will appear within your channel list and you can start watching hours of video content.

Feedback
Even though reddit.tv has been around for 5 years, reddit.tv is back in alpha. It’s a great way to watch video online, but it’s still finding its way. There are bugs we plan to address and improvements we plan to make. We’d love your feedback around any issues you run into. Please share your thoughts in /r/reddit_tv.
